We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Chaplin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In March 2021 I launched Makers Market LA.

My hope was that all of the artists, creators, designers and makers that had been at home during quarantine making beautiful goods would have a safe space to sell, an outdoor marketplace connect the community who had been cooped up at home the entire year. I wanted to create a fun, inclusive market that highlighted each artist fully. As a clothing designer myself, I have done a lot of big shows, I wanted this to feel more intimate, friendly and feel like a hug.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I was 9 I started collecting fashion magazines. I was obsessed with Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson and started teaching myself to make patterns and sew. My mom wasn’t a seamstress so she was always amazed and supportive of my creations. By high school I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer, I started making all of my clothing and wearing it to raves so I could show it off. While in design school I started a collection and was selling it to Planet Blue and Satine, that was in 2000, so for the past 22 years I have been a professional designer. Always extremely entrepreneurial, opinionated and driven, I would find myself working for companies, coming in as a designer and wanting to take them over as Creative Director within a few hours. I taught myself marketing, content creation, graphic design all the key tools that help serve me in business today. In 2013 I had a baby, Violet and when she turned one I created a brand in her name, Ultra Violet Kids. The brand served as a beautiful creative outlet for me but also a full blown business. Ultra Violet Kids used only deadstock fabrics and is all made by hand in Los Angeles. The sewers I hired were women, mothers, entrepreneurs, they made their own hours, set their own prices, I got to be a part of their babies childhood and it was magical. Our first season we were already selling internationally and for the next 6 years the company was pretty busy. When pandemic hit, it was time to shift so on March 12, 2020 I started sewing masks for front line worker and people, for every mask that was bought, one was donated. We sold over 3,000 in two days and it took myself and two sewers 3 months to sew all those masks. I have always been a hard worker, a hustler, a creator. Nothing in life has come so easy for me but with hard work comes great reward.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Makers Market LA would not be possible without the support of the establishments that we team up with to host our markets. Big shout out to Sharky at Jewel in Silverlake, Nossa in Los Feliz and Channel Islands Juice Co in Ventura. These hosts have been so much fun to work with and I am forever grateful to them for believing in our vision.
