Meet Michelle E. Lowe | Author/writer/artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle E. Lowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle E., have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
As an independent writer, the thought of abandoning the craft crosses my mind more than once each month, especially during those long stretches when not a single book sells. In those moments, I reflect on what it truly takes to build a successful writing career and explore other avenues for getting my work into the world. The challenge is resisting discouragement. The field I’ve chosen is relentlessly competitive, with countless new books published every day, all clamoring to be seen and heard. Standing out amid that noise is difficult, but it also demands creativity of a different kind, one that extends beyond the page into marketing and promotion.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Nothing in the creative field comes easily—lol. An idea for a story might strike like lightning or arrive in snippets to be stitched together over time. What ultimately sets my work apart is my voice: my writing style and the stories I choose to tell. Some of my proudest moments come from finishing a first draft or receiving that first five-star review from a reader who took a chance on my book.
Over the past twenty-plus years since choosing writing as a career, I’ve faced countless challenges—learning the craft, accepting that I’m not some prodigy (laughs), and understanding just how difficult it is to move forward in this profession. Still, if there’s one thing I hope people know about me, it’s this: even at forty-six, I remain an idealistic dreamer, still chasing my place in the sun.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a movie buff who lives close to L.A., one place I’d take a visiting friend is the Hollywood Museum, along with a variety of filming locations around town. After that, we’d hike up to the Hollywood Sign and have dinner at the Beetle House. We might even take a trip up to Santa Cruz to visit the redwoods.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank my children, Mia and Kayden, who keep encouraging me to tell stories, and my dad, Jim. Special thanks to my husband, Ben Deda, for his support. Thanks to Claire Casey, Yvette Bostic, MontiLee Stormer, Michael Arnold, Jonathan Fesmire, Mad Wilson, and William Bitner for their assistance and advice. Thanks to my editor, KH Koehler, for your hard work. Although they’re no longer here, I’d like to thank my mother, Janice, and my brother, Jimmy. Miss you both so very much. And a huge thanks and heaps of gratitude to my mentor, Catherine Rudy.
