We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Rodgers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I was born in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, a true native of California, I knew at an incredibly young age, that I had a passion for color and fashion. I was always playing with different types of foundations, lipsticks, eye shadows, hair styles, you name it! If it had color, and an available head of hair, my hands were in it! I knew back then at that point, I needed to figure out a way to pursue a creative career as a hair and makeup artist! I attended cosmetology school, and received my license to work on hair, nails and skin as a professional. I have also continued my education by taking classes that were dedicated to makeup artistry, hair styling, as well as learning the art of special effects for motion picture magic! Throughout my journey as a hair and makeup artist, I am truly thankful for working with such incredible photographers, models, actors, wardrobe stylists, producers, directors, PR Companies and especially the ever-amazing modeling agencies. I love my job and I am so excited that every day, I get to do what has always been in my heart. To create, to have fun, and to continue to strive to do my absolute best in this industry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At the very beginning of my career, I first assisted in a hair salon and then moved forward to retail cosmetics. This was a great steppingstone as it taught me to listen, have patience, and to be very humble. All the skills to work on set! Of course, there were ups and downs at the start along with rejection, but I would always take note of the advice I was given and learned how to become better at my job. So, when I am working on set with a new client or really any client, I will always start by having a conversation. This will help me to get to know my talent better as it brings a better level of comfort and trust. With having this discussion, there is another one that I must have with the team that is on set. I like to check in with the photographer, wardrobe stylist, producers, directors, PR Agents to make sure that all are happy with the result. And when that happens, you know then that your entire day, was an excellent day for all!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a great question as there are so many exciting places to go and amazing places to eat here! I would start off by having breakfast at The Kettle in Manhattan Beach! The food is incredible there and very filling. After that, walk around Manhattan Beach, go shopping and walk on the pier. Facials and massages at Queen Bee Salon and Spa in Culver City. Manicures and Pedicures at My Nail Bar in Santa Monica. Have our hair done at Beauty Beach Lounge in Playa Vista. Dinners at Urban Plates in Playa Vista and Compari’s Trattoria in Westchester. Hiking up to the Hollywood sign. Hanging out at the Santa Monica Pier to feel like a kid again. Shopping on Rodeo Drive. A bike ride along the beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As I look back to the beginning of what inspired my efforts to be a hair and makeup artist, I remember going through several fashion magazines. Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle, W Magazine, when I was just a young teenager in the 1980’s. It made me happy looking through these amazing magazines with cool clothing, fun makeup and stylish hair. These magazines brought me happiness and a sense of creativity, so much that I felt I could do this as a career. So yes, to all the fashion magazines and for my Mom that wrote the check for me to attend cosmetology school.
