We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Tan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by the foodie community on Instagram and how they use their own techniques/styles to portray food items. My food Instagram is also inspired by some of my favorite accounts like stirandstyle, hangrydiary, and cyneats. I love sharing my passion for good food to this same community in hopes that they will enjoy the food just as much as I do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I am not working on @intomyplate , I work as an occupational therapist–assisting individuals with an illness or injury regain their independence to taking care of themselves and engage in occupations that are meaningful to them. Learning how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable in different scenarios is definitely one lesson that has helped me develop professionally and personally. I enjoy connecting with my patients on a personal level and listen to their life stories and learn what they are passionate about.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would first show my BFF all the good food places in the San Gabriel Valley (Delicious Food Corner, Banh Mi My Tho, Savoy Kitchen, Yama Sushi, and any good boba place around the corner). We would then check out Kobe Bryant murals around the heart of Los Angeles while making stops at Ave 26 Tacos, brunch at Republique, and dessert at Tea Master (for the best matcha soft serve). We can’t forget to add in a few hikes (Runyon Canyon, Mount Baldy) and Elysian Park, Griffith Observatory, or The Spire (rooftop bar) for some panoramic views of LA! Ending with a night out in KTown with good food and vibes!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to all of my MVPs: my family and friends who patiently wait for my camera to eat first! (you know who you are)
