We had the good fortune of connecting with Mijin Kwon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mijin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I believe everyone is born with a natural artistic sense. Art has always been a natural part of my life. As a child, I loved to doodle and sketch, and gradually it grew into a curiosity about how to draw things with the right shapes based on what I saw. Later, I also became interested in expressing things that are not always visible but still feel important. Art has become a way for me to explore ideas.
Now, I focus on capturing moments that could be fleeting or overlooked in my daily life and sharing them through my work. Pursuing an artistic career is more than just creating art for me. So, it could be about connecting with others through these shared experiences.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My cityscape paintings reflect the experiences of my daily life. After leaving my hometown and living apart from my family, I naturally became a stranger in a new place. It wasn’t easy to adjust at first. As time passed, the surroundings became more familiar. At the same time, I could feel the moments of isolation, loneliness, and peace. Based on that, I started my work to share the moments that have permeated my daily life with others. I believe that the moments I paint will convey empathy and bring happiness to both those who visit and those who do not. My identity, which is not completely permeated might be an artist who can express this city where various cultures coexist well.
As an artist who has just started a career, it’s not easy. There would be plenty of challenges. But those tough times have also encouraged me to keep painting to pursue my career. I’ve come to appreciate the quiet beauty in everyday life, which can often go unnoticed. For me, painting is a way of holding onto those overlooked moments and turning them into something that lasts.
Art, to me, is like writing a diary. Each piece would hold a memory from my past. I know that someday I’ll look back on all these moments, and I want my work to reflect that sense of nostalgia, longing, and comfort. I hope that when people look at my paintings, they can find their meaning in them – whether it’s a sense of warmth, calm, or even just a moment of pause in a busy day.
What I’ve learned along the way is that art gives me a way to process everything – loneliness, joy, uncertainty. I hope that I become an artist who gives people warm moments through my work. I want to paint moments that become small treasures, reminding people to slow down and appreciate the little things in life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s interesting to think about how I’d show my best friend around this area, San Francisco. At the same time, since I enjoy quieter moments and find energy in simple activities, it’s a difficult question for me. My itinerary might be more laid-back than most, but I think that’s what makes it special.
If my best friend were visiting for a week and the weather was nice, we’d start with a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge which is iconic and always impressive. After that, we’d explore the nearby Presidio or Golden Gate Park, enjoying the nature around us.
San Francisco is such a diverse city, so we’d take advantage of the food scene, trying out different cuisines from all over the world. On the 2nd and 3rd days, if my friend loves nature, we’d do a short trip to the Muir Woods or even stay overnight at Yosemite. If they prefer wine, Napa Vallery would be perfect for a winery tour and some relaxation.
On 4th to 5th days, I’d tailor the activities to their interest. Maybe we’d watch a Giants or Warriors game if they’re into sports games, or visit the museums – MOMA, De Young Museum, or Legion of Honor. If they enjoy live performances, we could see a musical, play, or concert.
Toward the end of the week, we’d finish up any sightseeing, perhaps by taking a ferry to Sausalito or enjoying a cruise. I’d also introduce them to some local favorite spots-restaurants, pubs, or parks where we could relax and take in the city.
Since they’d be visiting for the first time, I’d focus on showing them places that capture the unique spirit of San Francisco. The city has a charm that reveals itself in small, quiet moments, and I’d love to share that with them. Whether we’re strolling through a neighborhood or enjoying a coffee at a local cafe, it’s the everyday experiences that make San Francisco feel special.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been fortunate to have received much support throughout this process, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love, encouragement, and guidance of many people. My family and those who have supported me have been a rock through my journey, believing in me even when I had doubts. I would also like to thank my mentor, Ms. Choi, who was my teacher at an art studio in South Korea, and Ms. Liew, who I met at an art studio in the US. Both have provided me with a constant source of wisdom and direction.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the professors of the Fine Art Department at the Academy of Art University, who not only helped me develop my voice as an artist over the past year but also supported me mentally and emotionally. My friends and fellow artists, who have been with me throughout my school years and beyond, deserve a huge thank you as well. Lastly, the art exhibitions, magazines, and any other art activities I’ve participated in have given me the motivation to keep moving forward on this path.
