We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikaela MacLean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikaela, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
What was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Honestly, there wasn’t one! It was born out of personal passion & a necessary career pivot because of an injury.

I have been a medical aesthetician since 2003, always working for dermatologists & plastic surgeons. In a way, I’d been perfectly content being an employee, however I’d started to burnout on the industry. Everyone is looking to “fix” the external & feel good about themselves from the outside, but they weren’t giving the same care & attention to the inside. Such a huge disconnect and I knew the struggle well, I’ve been there most of my own life.

I’d always been spiritually inclined in my personal life – studying astrology deeply, taking yoga teacher training, becoming a reiki master, and so many other things like that. I had always kept the 2 worlds separate but I had this intense calling to fuse it together and address that issue of people looking outside themselves to feel beautiful & worthy.

Then in 2020, literally 2 weeks before the whole west coast shut down, I had joined a med-spa with the intention of finally fusing everything together & making that my offering. High vibe facials fused with my Human Design & astrology work, crystals, reiki, sound healing, aromatherapy. While in quarantine, someone asked me to do a reading for them, like a lot of people, they felt lost. I had no plans to pursue reading professionally, but immediately my days & weeks filled up with people wanting me to read their charts & prescribe crystals, oils & practices to help them.

Eventually, these offerings were added to my menu at the office when it reopened. Later that winter, I fell on ice injuring my hand badly. I was no longer able to perform hands on skin care. Human Design, astrology, Yoga Nidra & other healing modalities then became my full time focus.

This huge change got me recognized in the industry for doing something completely different in the medical realm, and I was invited to lecture about what I now do at an aesthetic conference. This lead to meeting people I felt very connected to, people with the same goal in mind.
Shortly after the conference, I was invited to join Tox Josh Studios as a creator, where I would be part of a team but also be my own business. A huge part of me was scared to technically have my own business but it has been a wonderful experience where I feel I finally have control over my own destiny. I am able to focus on the work that truly makes me happy & what I want to bring to the aesthetic industry while at the same time, be supported by my favorite people who share a similar vision about inner & outer beauty.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is interesting – I don’t know of another aesthetician who using Human Design, astrology, etc to help people love & accept themselves! It definitely hasn’t been the easiest road, most people want to just come in for a facial and don’t necessarily understand the benefit of what it do. But, it’s an energy thing. When they do finally experience it, it creates a lasting change within the person that can’t be replicated with skin care products, treatments or injectables. I was a ballet dancer with depression & anorexia growing up, and then I fell into the aesthetic industry. I’ve always been so hard on myself & know it’s a common theme in people that needs to be healed – we chase perfection that doesn’t exist. What I do now is really the most beautiful & impactful work I’ve ever done in my life.

Even within the “Human Design reader” realm, I know my work is different. I synthesize my entire background of experience together to create a really unique experience, which finishes with my signature “Energetic Rx”. I “prescribe” crystals, oils, jewelry worn in specific locations based on astrology, embodiment practices, journal prompts, and much more to my clients to help them really anchor into themselves & their Dharma/purpose.

Some things I’m most excited about is sharing a lot of this wisdom on my podcast, BEAUTY BY DESIGN. I’ve jokingly said I’d like to be the Bob Ross of Human Design – I use my yoga teacher voice to educate people on these things so they can receive it all in a way that’s very soothing to the nervous system. I also write & record my own meditations & yoga nidras for beauty, which I’ve begun to feature on the podcast & plan to bring forth as an offering in my business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Yoga studios, float pods, crystal shops, meditation centers, the ocean!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
