We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The desire to be my own boss, without having to rely on anybody else for security. Because, at the end of the day the only person I’ll ever be able to truly rely on is myself. I believed that I was capable of creating something magnificent despite anybody who ever told me otherwise. I like to believe that the world provides everybody with more than enough resources to create the life that you want. Growing up I developed interests in a handful of different areas creatively. However, I never found myself stuck to just one area. I was always trying different things. Whether it was photography, cinematography, design, illustration, writing, or fashion there was never a time I felt like I was confined to one practice over another. Creating my own brand allows me to be a designer, a photographer, cinematographer, businessman, copywriter, and just about anything I want to be. It allows me to take all of my skills and apply them all in one place.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wet Dreams Surf Club is a fashion and apparel brand that serves as a reminder to those in constant pursuit of their wettest and wildest ambitions that anything in life is attainable. Wet Dreams Surf Club puts a creative twist on classic styles to suit those who dream big and are confident doing so. Our goal is to inspire individuals to create the life of their dreams. Our unique style and taste are symbolic of our mission as a brand. Each piece conveys a tasteful yet provocative message. We want our customers to feel like they are an important part of our community. No matter your ambitions or aspirations Wet Dreams Surf Club is an ode to those dedicated to creating a life for themselves.

We are excited and proud of the community that we have created thus far. Without the support of our community, none of this would be possible. Creating a brand has had its challenges. There are a lot of risks involved in starting your own business. We wouldn’t be where we are today without taking risks. Risk has played a major part in the successes and lessons that I’ve experienced in my life and my career. But taking risks is a must. Getting comfortable being uncomfortable is a small price to pay for living a dream. Every action or inaction involves risk whether we realize it or not.

However, overcoming risk would not be possible without passion and enthusiasm for what I do. Without passion and enthusiasm, I wouldn’t care to do what it takes to run a business, learn the skills necessary to do what I do or take the risks necessary for this business to grow. Without passion and enthusiasm, I would crack under the pressure that comes with starting a business. It’s passion and enthusiasm that keeps me resilient when things feel like they’re falling.

Overcoming these challenges has taught me one thing: success is just a mindset. I wanted to shift my energy and gear myself toward success, so I did. I changed the way I saw challenges. Everything negative; pressure, and challenges, have become an opportunity for me to rise. Moments of doubt are opportunities to grow. Only through experience of trial and suffering do we grow, inspire ambition, and achieve success. Overcoming challenges also requires a great deal of patience. You must be patient! Nothing comes fast and easy. Patience is a very valuable quality to have when starting your own business. I still face challenges daily and expect nothing less. If it were easy everybody would do it

In essence, my brand represents everything that comes with having goals and being ambitious. Wet Dreams Surf Club is for the people brave enough to dream despite the challenges, doubts, and pressure that comes with it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many cool places to visit and fun things to do in Los Angeles. Just thinking about how much there is to do here makes me realize how much I still haven’t done! My favorite place to get work done and spend my mornings is at Maru Coffee in the arts district. Great coffee, and cool people. Love the vibe. In the back of Maru is a shop called Departamento. Departamento is a retail concept shop in Los Angeles that showcases some amazing pieces of clothing. It’s sick. I find tons of inspiration here. If you haven’t been, check it out. Besides that, there are a lot of retail shops that I frequent. To name a few: Museum of Peace and Quiet, Mohawk General Store, General Admission, Brain Dead Fabrications, Mister Green Life Store, and Brother Brother LA. These are some of my favorite places to shop. Hit them up if you’re in town. A few spots I like to hang out at include: Silver Lake Meadows, the Arts District downtown, Abbot Kinney, Rose Avenue, and the occasional trip to Manhattan Beach. On the West Side (where I live) I spend most of my time at the beach. But when I’m not at the beach I’m having coffee in the morning at Little Lunch, Bluey’s, or Goodboybob. You can also find me putting in work at the paddle tennis courts in Venice, or taking a stroll through town during sunset. We’d for sure have to go on sunrise and/or a sunset swim in either Venice or Santa Monica. In terms of going out, Wednesday nights at Bodega Wine Bar can get wild. On the weekends, there are so many going out spots. To name a few of my favorites Winston House, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, No Vacancy, and Good Times at Davey Wayne’s are always fun. A few of my favorite dinner spots include Botanica Restaurant in Silver Lake, Elephante in Santa Monica, and Wallflower in Venice. The best hangover food? Bluey’s Kitchen, for sure. Say what’s up to Marcos for me if he’s there. If he’s not, find Shirley or Lupita. I love that whole crew. If you see them tell them the twins say what’s up. I also enjoy spending downtime with friends in the area. I’m always driving back and forth from downtown, going to events, working on creative projects, taking photos, and meeting people. Besides that, I’m either driving up the PCH headed to Malibu or making trips to Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is hands down one of the most beautiful places in California in my opinion. All in all, there’s so much to do in LA that I could never sum it all up. You’d have to come to experience it yourself!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate this interview to my friends and family who have always supported my creative endeavors and never doubted my potential. I also dedicate this to the many people who come in and out of life temporarily. Without these people, I would not know myself nearly the same. These are the people we experience, and learn invaluable lessons from.
