We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie J. Bower and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valerie J., what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by Los Angeles, my hometown Wilmington, my new neighborhood in Long Beach, my family, my friends, music, photography, art, life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I have an idea, I try it. I always think about making work for myself first, and if people like it that’s cool. I just try not to let what other people like dictate the art I make. I also try to keep pushing my ideas further and experiment with different things to set myself apart. For the rest of my life, I just want to keep creating.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a homebody, so I’m kinda boring. For shopping I’d do Santee Alley, Del Amo Swap Meet, Santa Fe Springs. Ride the Blue Line, the bus, or any public transit. Avoid high tourist areas. To eat, find those hole-in-the-wall spots, taco trucks, street food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom is always supportive of my work and projects, but she also knows when I have too much on my plate and need to slow down. My dad also got me my first camera and even today he still combs through swap meets and thrift stores trying to find cameras for me since he knows how much I love photography. Everyone along the way who has shared or supported me and my work. I’m grateful that other people connect to what I do.
