We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikel Arrindell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Brooklyn and my parents are Trinidadian. That mixture of cultures and being a 90’s baby had the biggest influence on how I design and see the world. My mother is a self proclaimed fashionista and thought me how to dress and put outfits together or in her words “coordinate”. My father breathes confidence and often says ” I make the clothes look good not the other way around”. The West Indian concoction they created resulted in a kid from Brooklyn, who loves fashion, sneakers, luxury brands and making things by hand. The desire to create and make things from scratch stems from my Father’s skill with his hands. Watching him build cabinets, tables and chairs in the backyard, instilled in me how much more meaningful items were when you made them yourself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart is my desire to tell a story in every piece I make. Highlighting a story in a product gives so much more meaning to it and evokes emotions that last longer than the item will. I thrive on creating something that last longer than myself. That viewpoint gets me excited about some upcoming collections including the “Black Heart Club” and Teneo Handbags. Two collections that will meaningful stories that we all have dealt with in a creative way.

Getting to this point in my career has been rewarding to say the least. It is not easy being self taught but the feeling of completing a project that I may have thought would have been outside my scope is next level. Accepting the challenge, disregarding any self doubt and succeeding; is on of the sweetest fruits in life. Along the way, I learned to be patient with myself and that it is ok to take a step back and recalibrate.

I want everyone customer, client, and supporter to know that they deserve to feel special and that your yesterday doesn’t define you but it can help you make a better today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Boston there’s alot to choose from. Since I’m a sucker for tacos, we definitely have to pass by Loco taqueria, and La Hacienda. The food journey continues as we go to the Caribbean spots like “D Coal Pot” and Flames. Hopefully they come during the summer so we can go to DayTrill or even Yellow Cup. Lastly to end it I’m dragging everyone to Camp Nowhere for drinks and games.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First off, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my customers and supporters; they constantly share my work and continue to support since my early days; I am beyond thankful of them. When I first got started, I began making designs for my fraternity (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc). That propelled a lot of interest in my abilities and allowed me to venture out and try other mediums. Currently I must give a shoutout to Liz, my backbone who keeps me sane and on track and Nygel, my brother, who always pushes my thought process of creativity.
