We had the good fortune of connecting with Miki Yokoyama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miki, what’s your definition for success?
When I think about success, there is no goal or any shape or definitions of success for me. There’s no shape or definition. That is also how I think about what I want to express in my art. What I want to express has no goal, no end, and no limit. That is something universal, something infinite, something unlimited. That is why, there’s no shape or definition. I think those ideas are like an illusion. But also real at the same time. Our life is like an illusion, but we are also here in reality. I think I can say the same thing about success. That it is like an illusion, but that it is also here. Rainbows put their colors in the sky and it makes us feel like someone painted on the canvas of the sky. But if we go close to the rainbow, it is totally different from what saw in the distance, and we can not touch or feel it as we had imagined. There’s no shape and nothing we can touch. Success has no definition for me, but what is why I can feel success at this moment. I am in a situation where I can paint and fortunately some people enjoy my artwork. So this moment is success to me. What I want to do in my life is to express my feeling, my heart, and myself in my artwork. There’s no limit and I will continue as long as my life lasts. Even after I physically die, I hope my message what I wanted to express will be reach the hearts of others. I’m so thankful that I can write about myself here. Thank you so much.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I am proud of myself is, that I learned how to paint all by myself. I haven’t had any art education in school. Myself was the only teacher for me to express my feeling and to put my heart into painting. I had to face myself and ask myself then my art came from my heart naturally. It was not easy for the first time when I started to sell my art, because I didn’t know nothing about it, I didn’t have any artist friend, and I even didn’t speak good enough English. I think the only the way to overcome those hardship, is that I have to face to myself, and fight with myself. I learned the hardest enemy is always within me. But if you look into and face yourself, you will find the way, step by step, little by little.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spot is Grand Canyon! I love the feeling to stand up at the top of Grand CanyonI and look down from the edge. I feel like I can fly. I like to feel I’m very small tiny thing in the Grand Canyon, and I like the feeling I disappear into it. But at the same time I feel the connection to the world, and to the universe. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Moses Hacmon He identify as water. His artwork is breathtaking… He developed a technique to capture forms in water that are invisible to the naked eye.
