We had the good fortune of connecting with MILA JAM and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MILA, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Self motivation, Persistence, determination and lots of rehearsals.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a black woman of trans experience in the entertainment industry. A singer/songwriter and activist for the Trans Community. I blend my music and performance art with activism: Artivism. I have traveled the world with theater productions and my own original pop music, creating an inspiring story for not only other black Transwomen, but anyone that strives for greatness. My journey has not been easy due to the over abundance of adversity, transphobia, misogyny and hate constantly perpetuated throughout society. Even though my existence is threatened everyday, I believe I have a calling to change the world for the better. I want the world to know that trans folk are a gift to society and that we are the greatest storytellers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite places in the city are Empanada Mama’s in Hells Kitchen, Cafeteria in Chelsea and Friedman’s in Midtown. I love sheeps meadow in Central Park, the street market in Union Square and shopping in Soho. The best disco dance night in the city is at The Monster Bar every Sunday night across from The Stonewall in the west village. I love walking the Highline from the meatpacking district on a sunny day up to Hudson yards!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My inspiration and aunt Shelia Turner. She was not only my favorite human growing up, but she was my first ally and support that inspired my whole family to love me unconditionally. Also, my mommy, Mama Jam, who is simply my rock.
