We had the good fortune of connecting with Milan Mathew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Milan, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
To always have my own back and never give up even if no one is in my corner. You don’t need anyone’s approval to keep believing in your self and keep going. There were so many videos that I kept creating and posting, that didn’t get any significant attention but at the end of the day I was and still am proud of those videos and you can’t be upset if it doesn’t “go viral”. Going viral shouldn’t be the goal but you should enjoy what you are doing for YOU and not to please others and you attitude really does change in this industry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art now is creating content and filming. I went to school for graphic design and was a Mobile Designer right out of college however, as time goes by my passions have definitely changed lanes. I now do social media full time and it’s been the best decision of my life. I really enjoy putting a smile on others’ and give a break from life, even if it’s just for a few seconds. I really do put a lot of time and effort and. I genuinely have fun making videos and I hope others can see that too! I’m probably most proud of the Cultural Hot Seat Challenge that went viral on TikTok and ended up with me on an NBA commercial. Those times were definitely unreal and I’lll cherish those moments for life. Was it easy? I’m not sure about easy but I’m lucky and grateful my platform grew so fast as it’s been about a year since I started making fashion content on tiktok. Some things I’ve learned along the way are to truly never give up and don’t worry about how well the video or post is going to do because if you have high expectations, then you’ll never be satisfied. The algorithms on all these apps are very confusing and just when you think you have it figured out, you don’t So as long as you enjoy your video, that is all that matters. Just because an app doesn’t push out your content, doesn’t mean it’s not amazing. If the right people saw it, they would love it but that’s not something you can control. Focus on the amazing people who are still there and support you and if there’s no one, hey, you have yourself!

Something I want people to know about my brand and story are social media isn’t everything. In reality it’s almost nothing. A lot of people like to paint a different image to others and it’s easy to compare and fall into this cycle but my brand is authentic to who I am, which is why it’s so easy to me. What you get on screen is what you get off screen because it’s simply unrealistic to fake it. My brand is me and who I am. I want people to feel happy when they come to my page and feel better about themselves as we are all human and there are too many expectations everywhere so I really hope to encourage others to love themselves and drop these expectations and live your life for yourself and no one else.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston we have a problem? Just kidding no problem here other that there’s so much amazing food and not enough time. I’d definitely take them to NASA and do a tour of the rockets and mission center and everything else space related! Then we’d stop by M&M grill, which is one of my fav hole in the wall places to eat at! Houston’s brunch scene is super dope as well and we’d probably stop by tacos-a-go-go or snooze for their amazing eggs benedict and mimosas! Something not so exciting is Galveston beach because it’s infamous for it’s brown sea but it’s also kind of hilarious so we’d have to stop by there and spend the rest of the day on Keemah Boardwalk or Pleasure Pier! We also have the Museum of Fine Arts, which has two Van Gogh pieces (aka my favorite artist), and then hop around in the Museum district as there’s the Natural Science Museum, Children’s Museum, Bike Museum, and any other museum you can think of!
