We had the good fortune of connecting with Mimi Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mimi, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My thoughts about risk are, “the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.” Taking risks has played a huge role in my life. I took a big risk in leaving home and moving to a brand new city to follow my styling dreams with no plan, really no stable place to stay, and I only knew 3 people. It wasn’t easy and there were plenty of times I wanted to give up and go back home. With hard work and resilience, I have accomplished many goals and dreams that I thought were unattainable at that time. Those goals included being published 3 times, working backstage at fashion shows (including New York Fashion Week), and meeting so many successful and influential people in the industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe I have a lot of resilience compared to others, which is what sets me apart from others. Starting your business from scratch requires a lot of that.
I am most proud of the journey it took to get myself to where I am. I started off crashing on my friend’s couch and doing free work, just to get myself out there and get my work noticed. I made a conscious effort to collaborate on projects with notable people in the industry. That eventually led to publications, then fashion shows, networking events, and now I’m being recognized by several different platforms. This journey was not easy at all and there were many times I wanted to give up. To overcome these challenges, I had to look at the bigger picture. I knew I had to put in the work to reap the rewards. No success comes easy. I’ve learned how to be more patient and block out any negative outside noise that will disrupt my productivity.
I want people to know that even though I’ve been doing this for 7 years, I’m still no where near where I want to be. I am still learning everyday and everything is a trial and error. Success is a moving target. You have to make sure that you are ready to adapt, adjust, and reset when you need to.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I really want to give a shout-out to my friends and network of people around me. I truly have an amazing support system that constantly reminds me of my potential. Without them, I would continue to doubt my talent and probably would have given up a while ago.
