Meet Mingyang Alvin Li | Director of Cinematography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mingyang Alvin Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mingyang Alvin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For me personally, I have a deep affinity for taking risks. I believe that embracing risk is immensely beneficial for my growth and progress. When faced with risks, I think it’s crucial to understand and assess them, making wise decisions accordingly. People are naturally fearful of risks, but confronting and overcoming this fear is essential for our development. For instance, if I consider starting a new business venture, it involves financial and personal risk, but it also offers the potential for great personal and professional growth. Stepping out of our comfort zones at appropriate times is necessary, but it’s also important to rationally analyze the potential risks and rewards. It’s not about recklessly facing risks but rather about considering them thoughtfully. For example, before engaging in an extreme sport like skydiving, one should weigh the thrill and the experience gained against the safety measures and potential dangers. In summary, taking risks should be a calculated decision, not an impulsive leap.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a cinematographer, my passion extends beyond the technical aspects of camera work and lighting. What truly sets me apart is my commitment to creating visuals that not only narrate a story but also resonate emotionally with the audience. The ability to make viewers fall in love with the characters, to immerse them in the story, and to evoke a strong emotional response through my depiction of scenes, brings me immense fulfillment. I thrive on this connection with the audience, knowing that my work has the power to move and engage people.
The journey has been filled with its share of hurdles. Adapting to the varied demands of different film genres, managing the challenges of outdoor shoots, and keeping pace with the latest technological advancements in cinematography have all been part of my learning curve. Each project has been a unique opportunity to refine my skills and push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
The greatest accomplishment, however, comes from the recognition and appreciation of the audience. When viewers acknowledge the subtleties of my work, when they feel a part of the world I’ve helped create, that’s when I feel most rewarded. This appreciation is not just a testament to my skills but also a profound motivation. It drives me to continually innovate, to explore new techniques, and to keep honing my craft. The joy of seeing my work resonate with an audience, of knowing that I’ve contributed to their cinematic experience, is truly my biggest motivator.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Incorporating a deep appreciation for both nature and local culture, our week-long journey to Kings Canyon National Park would be enriched with visits to local eateries. Nestled amidst the stunning wilderness, we’d take time to explore small, family-owned restaurants in the surrounding areas. These culinary excursions would allow us to savor authentic local flavors, giving us a taste of the region’s culinary heritage. From hearty breakfasts that fuel our day’s adventures to cozy dinners that offer a glimpse into the local lifestyle, each meal would be an opportunity to connect more deeply with the area’s culture and community. This blend of outdoor exploration and local dining would create a holistic experience, combining the awe of Kings Canyon’s natural beauty with the warmth and richness of its local food and people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If I were to dedicate a shoutout for my success and where I am in life, it would undoubtedly be to my parents. Their continuous support and the countless sacrifices they’ve made behind the scenes have been the foundation of my journey. For instance, I recall how they always encouraged my interests, whether it was staying up late to help with a science project or driving me to early morning practices. They were the ones who taught me the value of hard work and persistence, often through their own examples, like working extra hours to ensure I had the resources for my education.
Their belief in my career has been unwavering. I remember when I was hesitant to take a major career leap; it was their encouragement and trust in my abilities that gave me the courage to move forward. They have celebrated my achievements with genuine pride and have been my comforting solace during setbacks, always reminding me to keep faith in myself.
The little things they’ve done have added up in profound ways. From their home-cooked meals during my late-night studies to their reassuring phone calls during my first job in a new city, these gestures have been constant reminders of their love and support. Their trust in my decisions, allowing me to carve my own path while providing guidance and wisdom, has been invaluable.
In every step of my journey, my parents have been there, not seeking the spotlight but always providing a steady light that guides me. My accomplishments are as much a testament to their upbringing and values as they are to my efforts. For this, I owe them an immense debt of gratitude and recognition.
