We had the good fortune of connecting with Moe Wakai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Moe, what are you inspired by?
I find immense inspiration in the creative energy of fellow artists and the meaningful exchanges I have with friends. My brainstorming process often unfolds organically during conversations with others. While they might not even realize it, these everyday interactions serve as invaluable brainstorming sessions for me. I’m constantly absorbing their thoughts, reflections, and intentions, which fuel my artistic endeavors and drive my work forward.

My pieces explore the dynamics of relationships and, frequently, the power of words. I’m intrigued by how language can carry diverse meanings for different individuals and how it can evoke distinct emotions regardless of the speaker’s intentions. The genuine and honest interactions I experience with people are the most valuable sources of inspiration for me and deeply influence my works.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is concept-driven yet accessible, designed to resonate with audiences outside the traditional sphere of Fine Art. While some may perceive Art with a capital ‘A’ as intense or abstract, I believe it’s a diverse spectrum encompassing everything from the beautiful to the controversial. My work exists at the intersection of kindness and loneliness.

After graduating from the School of the Art Institute in 2021, I embarked on a journey to share my art with a wider audience. Initially faced with the challenge of navigating post-graduation life, I’ve since dedicated myself to creating and pursuing opportunities. This includes applying for residencies, competitions, grants, and gallery exhibitions.

Attending weekly art openings has allowed me to immerse myself in the vibrant Los Angeles art scene. While initially focused on networking with strangers, I’ve learned to prioritize connections with individuals who align with my artistic vision. Now, I approach these events as opportunities to engage with fellow artists, appreciate their work, and leave feeling inspired.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For an unforgettable week-long trip with my best friend, I’d kick off our adventure with a culinary journey through Los Angeles. We’d start our day with brunch at Destroyer in Culver City, savoring their innovative dishes. Next, we’d head to Coffee Commissary on Motor Ave for a nice cup of coffee. We’d indulge in a dinner experience at Alta Adams, relishing in their exquisite New American cuisine and fine wine selection.

Of course, our evening wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Father’s Office for a refreshing beer and lively atmosphere. And when the midnight snack craving hits, we’d make our way to Brothers Cousins for some mouthwatering El Pastor tacos topped with a slice of pineapple.

During our stay, we’d immerse ourselves in the vibrant art scene of Los Angeles. We’d explore Craft Contemporary, where Sundays offer ‘pay-what-you-can’ entry to view their impressive collection of craft-based artworks. Nearby, we’d visit Band of Vices and Shoshana Wayne galleries in West Adams, soaking in the diverse array of contemporary works.

Venturing further, we’d explore the bustling galleries in Downtown LA, including the renowned Murmurs. Of course, we couldn’t miss the iconic Hammer Museum and LACMA, but we’d also seek out hidden gems like Nonaka Hills and Make Room in Hollywood. And no art tour of LA would be complete without a visit to the esteemed Jeffrey Deitch Gallery and the ever-evolving showcase at The Landing.

Throughout our week-long journey, we’d indulge in delectable cuisine, immerse ourselves in captivating art, and create unforgettable memories in the dynamic city of Los Angeles.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to extend a special shoutout to Carneice Colvin, my dear friend and fellow artist, who has been an incredible source of love and inspiration in my life here in LA. Carneice radiates kindness and care in all her words and actions. Thank you, Carneice, for being the wonderful human being that you are!
