We had the good fortune of connecting with Monece Starling and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monece, how do you think about risk?
I view risk as learning lessons. I’d rather take a chance than stay where I am, because I already know what’s it like where I am. And the worst that can happen is I’ll end up back where I started. So I’ll take a risk over being complacent “for $500 Bob.” When Im approached with a decision, I ask myself if this something I would regret if I don’t try? If the answer is yes, then I’ll more than likely go for it.

That way if thinking played a lot into my career. I had to learn to be a risk taker. I took a risk to move to California to start my career in entertainment and I’ve been here for 6 years now. I took a risk and quite my stable job without fully knowing how I’ll survive financially. It’s been over a year and I’ve had more job opportunities than I could imagine. I’m at a vulnerable state with my life, because I now fully relinquished control over to God. I don’t know if my business will last, I don’t when I’ll get my next job, I don’t know if I’ll have to move. But I do know I love what I do, I have peace, I have my sanity, and I work make my own schedule! The only way to move forward is to move!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I’m not acting or baking pies I’m creating content. Right now I’m focused on vlogging about restaurants on my show called Mo Eats There’s so many places to eat and it can be overwhelming trying to pick a place. So I go out to different restaurants and talk about their parking, quality, prices, and the food. I’m basically the live version of Yelp. I’m a foodie, so getting to explore the food options in LA is exciting. My dream would be to turn it into a profitable job and ha e my own food show or be a judge on a food show. Building a brand is challenging, especially doing it by myself. I actually started years ago with Mo Eats, but life got in the way and I put it aside. I learned that I have to give myself deadlines, and instead of trying to do it every week, that I could break it up in seasons. I had to take on the role of a producer and plan everything out, so it’s less stress on me. And the trick is to just start. And it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can learn along the way. One thing that helped me keep going is thinking about the next person. If I’m having a hard time I’m sure there are others like me. And if I can keep going that will encourage others to not give up too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of my best friend came to visit I’m taking her to all the gorgeous views LA has like watching the sunset at the beach in La Jolla I or Malibu and ride down PCH. For food we’ll go to places I’ve vlogged about on Mo Eats such as,  Bea Bea’s and Blue Jam for brunch, Juicy Crawfish for seafood boil, Pablitos for street taco, Mardi Gras Tuesday for the chargrilled oysters, Comfort La for chicken wings, Beauty and Essex and EP LP for a rooftop dining experience and bar. And lastly a Korean BBQ place so you can cook your own food at the table. As you can tell we’ll be eating good.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God gets all of the credit for everything I do. I would like to also shout-out my parents James and Tammy, who were the first to love and encourage me in my career. They sat through all my home performances that I made them watch. I also like to shout-out my friends for their support. I can always call on them when I need to brainstorm. They remind me of who I am and they help me to reach my full potential.
