We had the good fortune of connecting with Mônica Moura and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mônica, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always had an inclination to the arts, from a very young age. As I grew older I realized that that was the area that would best accommodate my desires an abilities.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work mostly with animation, more specifically stop-motion, even though I also work with 2D digital animations sometimes. I think it really depends on the nature of the project. I’m into building my own “animation machines”, which can be considered kinetic sculptures. In my most recent film “A Festa”, I used strata-cut animation a lot; this technique has quickly become a big part of my production in the last couple of years. My process consists of tying the theme of each piece to the technique and visuality in ways that reveal the potentials of each chosen material. I’d say generally that I’m interested in deconstructive topics inside animation and in works that question their own medium. I believe these aspects are deeply present in my production as an artist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really enjoyed LACMA when I visited it, it has an amazing collection and the exhibitions are always impressive. The tar pits, which are located right next to it, were also super fun and interesting.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d definitely like to thank my parents and my brother for always supporting me throughout my career. It is vital to have someone else who believes in you when you’re feeling insecure or having doubts.
