Meet Monica Tyson | Estate Liquidator/ Estate Sales

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Tyson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My name is Monica Tyson, and I am the proud owner of Vintique Finds Estate Sales. My journey into the estate sale and thrift world began in my childhood, frequenting places like Salvation Army, Goodwill, and the now-closed Alpine Village Swap Meet. Even then, I had a deep passion for fashion, art, and architecture, always on the lookout for unique and daring items while enjoying the thrill of finding bargains.
After high school, I started selling Native American jewelry and vintage clothing at local flea markets, sourcing many of my items from estate sales! Stepping into estate sales mesmerized me and completely changed my world. The rush of entering amidst the chaos, negotiating deals, exploring beautiful homes, and the thrill of treasure hunting was unlike anything I had experienced before. Estate sales provide a profound opportunity to glimpse into someone’s life, fostering empathy in those who attend. Witnessing personal belongings find new homes instead of ending up in the trash resonated deeply with me, understanding their sentimental value and memories attached.
Inspired by this experience, I decided to start my own business. I applied for a business license, I created my own website and began promoting my services online. My first client happened to be old time Hollywood actor, Leslie Nielsen’s, daughter, a moment that affirmed my journey. I started my business at just 24 years old and I became one of the youngest self-made individuals hosting estate sales in Southern California. I am proud of how my passion and desire to assist others have shaped my career path and led me to where I am today.

What should our readers know about your business?
What distinguishes most clients when choosing among the numerous estate sale companies available is, undoubtedly, integrity. Estate sales typically arise from sensitive circumstances such as what we refer to as the Triple D’s: Death, Disease, or Divorce. Clients find themselves in a vulnerable position, often navigating this process for the first time with little knowledge of its complexities. This is where honesty and integrity become paramount.
Clients also seek assurance in our expertise regarding the valuation of items. What sets us apart from other companies is our commitment to providing a comprehensive full concierge service. We approach each estate sale with honesty, empathy, and above all, kindness and understanding during our clients’ difficult times. Within a short span of two weeks, we efficiently organize, price, advertise, and open an entire lifetime collection of items to the public. This dedication ensures that our clients receive the support they need, from start to finish.
Ive learned many lessons along the way. I always say that hosting estate sales is like taking on 6 different kinds of jobs at once. You need the skills of: salesperson, interior decorator, psychologist, marketing and advertising director, appraiser, and negotiator to ensure a successful sale. Many assume that starting an estate sale company is simply about opening a home to the public, but it involves extensive behind-the-scenes work.
The work that goes behind running an estate sale is extensive. We meticulously inspect every inch and corner of the houses, relying on an eye for art and beauty to identify valuable items and avoid mistakenly undervaluing items like diamonds and gold as costume jewelry. Moreover, we must navigate the challenging negotiations, sometimes encountering customers who haggle aggressively — like the time a customer offered $1 for a $150 item. I always emphasize the importance of respectful negotiation, especially given the sensitive nature of estate sales.
This profession demands resilience and thick skin, as it involves managing delicate situations and ensuring every aspect of the sale meets our clients’ needs.
Beyond the challenges, this has been one of the most enriching experiences for me. It has humbled me greatly in a short span of time, and I am genuinely thankful for it. Additionally, it has motivated me to document family stories for clients, ensuring they can be passed down to future generations. As the older generation passes, their stories are integral to preserving history. This aspect is equally rewarding to me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Kiki, my assistant, and Mario, our security guard. They have witnessed the growth of Vintique Finds firsthand, and I owe much of my success to their unwavering dedication, kindness, and hard work. Words cannot adequately convey how thankful I am for their invaluable contributions. And of course my parents for believing in me.
