We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Lawton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My customers and the social media community I interact with, are my number 1 priority. As long as I make every decision from a place of how I can serve and serve better, we are all winners. I believe that a loyal following comes from the putting the very best quality products out there, with the very best ingredients and doing so with the attitude of “how can I serve these people to the utmost best of my abilities”.
What should our readers know about your business?
Building a business is never easy and requires an unlimited amount of faith in oneself, and for me, God. Challenges and obstacles are necessary in building a business and the best advice I can give is to be ADAPTABLE. Meaning, when you hit a wall, look for an alternate route and roll with it. Ultimately, this attitude and flexibility had allowed myself and my brand to grow and thrive. My heart and my gut have never steered me wrong, and I think it’s important to pace yourself when making bigger decisions or taking larger risks. There’s no rush, but I also think it’s important to always be moving in a forward motion. Never stopping. Podcasts and coaching tools are priceless to reinforce this drive and faith in oneself. As a business owner, it’s you that needs to believe in you. No one else. My brand Cocoa Bar In A Jar is my dream come true business and I am so thankful to create, serve, and spread chocolate love!

SPOON IT, SPREAD IT, DIP IT, DRIZZLE IT, CHILL IT! Did you know that CBJ makes a candy shell on cold treats in seconds AND amazing, healthy chocolate candies when chilled in a chocolate mold in the freezer in minutes??!!
I LOVE treats and sweets! But, keeping myself in check is the overall goal and I like to maintain a healthy lifestyle and live by the the 80/20 rule. That said, almost 10 years ago, Cocoa Bar In A Jar was born out of my quest to create and make a ‘healthier chocolate’ to replace my traditional chocolate candies and satisfy my sweet-tooth. Why? Because, I noticed after eating traditional sugary snacks, especially when I over consumed, I would feel, well, crappy. Paired with postpartum anxiety, thyroid and hormonal issues I was having at the time, all I really wanted was to feel ‘good’. Soon, that ‘feeling good’ desire outweighed my sugar binge desire (which came loaded with various side effects-sugar crashes, puffiness, dry skin, sleeplessness, if I had too much, jitters, etc) and being healthy became my main focus. So, this meant limiting the foods that slowed me down. Soooo, I created CBJ to fill my own need for something sweet, that was lower fat, low in sugar, that didn’t taste like a ‘diet’ food OR ‘health food’, and was made with whole food ingredients). Something too good to be true, have you. For about 7 years I would simply enjoy CBJ on my own and sometimes share with family and friends. Orginally, I NEVER intended to distribute CBJ. Cocoa Bar In A Jar was created as an act of love for myself and my body. I created it to fill a void in my diet that checked that appropriate chocolate ‘happy’ box for me. And now, (how blessed am I?) I get to spread the love, share it with you and countless others. Now, THAT is beautiful and what this is all about! Spreading chocolate smiles is my absolute FAVORITE THING.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The beach is my absolute favorite place. The sun, the water, the sand between your toes. Pure heaven! A trip up north to Ventura or Santa Barbara, lunch at a beachside cafe, along with some drinks, good conversation, and then some good old beach sunning…recipe for bliss in my book.
What/Who is the most important factor behind your success?
Building this business as a single mother too, two young boys has allowed me to create, be creative, grow and give back, BUT it also has given me the opportunity to be a stay at home mother, working in the nooks and crannies of mom life. In the course of 4 years my boys have watched their mom go from a very difficult time in her life to a successful, thriving business owner. THEY are my ‘why’. Without them, I would’ve had never had the drive and the motivation and the fire to make this happen. They are my everything.
