Meet Montana Lewis-berumen | Farmer, Entrepreneur, Model

We had the good fortune of connecting with Montana Lewis-berumen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Montana, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As organic growers, we hope that we can impact our community and other local surrounding areas with the awareness and knowledge of how important it is to eat local. We are providing our neighboring cities with fresh organic produce , which of course is nourishing their bodies with vitamins from whole foods.

What should our readers know about your business?
We are set apart from other growers because we are boutique urban growers. Most farms are in farming regions, but we are located in the city with urban development all around us. We also specialize in a strawberry variety called Gaviota, which has a super pungent & sweet flavor.
As a farm, I think we will always face challenges due to weather and other factors of society. 10 years ago, our family was facing many challenges and adversity with competition with large corporate farms. We decided we need to be innovative and keep up with the changing times. We rebranded everything and then approached grocery stores to wholesale our strawberries. We currently supply our organic strawberries to Erewhon, Bristol Farms, Wholefoods, & Mothers Market , along with restaurants & farmers markets throughout Los Angeles and Orange County.
Mother Nature plays a huge role and impact that our crops can flourish. We need the right amount of water and sunshine. Too much rain isn’t good, and unfortunately the last 2 years of rainfall caused a lot of damage to the crops. We do our best to remain hopeful and continue to grow new harvest.
However, most importantly, in order for the small farms to be successful, we rely on our local communities support by shopping the season’s harvest.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ahhh, so many great spots to visit. We are located in Orange County and there are so many lovely places!
A definite must would be a dinner at A’s Restaurant, everything on the menu is a 10/10. Going for coastal drive with beautiful views. A few days exploring Laguna Beach. Watching the sunset at little corona del mar beach. Shop and explore the local farmers market. Lots of nature as our coastal cities are so beautiful. Lunch at Fermentation Farm. A day in San Juan Capistrano. And lastly a visit for tacos, ceviche and churros from the Northgate Market in Costa Mesa : )

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to extend gratitude and appreciation for my father-in-law, the founder of our farm, for his hard work and dedication. My mother in law who has had a huge impact on the farm with continuous love and support. And to my husband, who continues with an amazing work ethic, innovation, and positivity to all the changes we face as a small farm.
