We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Absher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say the people I have in my corner. I may be the one running the show and content creation, but it is the quality people I have on the show that make it so successful. A big motivator for me starting this podcast was my partner Justin. He finally had enough with me talking about it, and just went ahead and bought the equipment for me that I needed to get recording. All my guest co-hosts lend authentic, unique takes to the show and bring their spin to the stories–Justin, Jerry, Lauren and Alejandra all bring so much to Two Hot Takes. Without these people the show and business wouldn’t be as successful. Having quality people is the basis of any successful business, especially on a podcast show like this.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been full of twists and turns. I’ve worked as a server, nanny, retail associate, medical scribe, flight attendant, and now occupational therapist/podcaster. I never would have guessed I’d be a podcast host after a 3 year doctorate level occupational therapy program, but thanks to the pandemic and being unable to find a job for a year.. here we are. I think this is what I’m most proud about though, yes I went to an extensive program but instead of thinking ‘I went this route..’ or ‘its too late to start anything else’ I still went for it and started a passion project that has turned into a successful business. Embracing the fear and imposter syndrome has been one of the most difficult lessons, but we all have it.. and if you can move past it and really go for it the potential is limitless. One thing I’d really like people to take away from my story is that you can do it. I’m just an average girl who thought her whole life was mapped out with a healthcare career, I never expected to be creative or have a successful show. So take the chance, do what you love, try that passion project.. you never know where it could take you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d have to get on as many of my favorite rooftop bars as possible–mama shelter has the best cauliflower tempura, ace rooftop has amazing tacos and pitchers (and a pool), elephante is gorgeous and has fabulous drinks. We could also keep it street level a couple nights with Bacari on 3rd, robots jinya, or toca Madera.
I love getting outdoors so I’d have to take my guest for a drive down to Manhattan beach for some sun and a beach picnic, Malibu creek state park for a hike, and Cielo Farms for some amazing canyon views (wine and pizza included).
I think a bucket list Los Angeles place I love taking friends is the Magic Castle.. I’m a sucker for a good magic trick and everything from dinner to the intimate galleries is amazing.
Los Angeles has so much to offer–I’ve lived here for years and still have barely scratched the surface.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Finding Fire podcast–For sparking my idea and encouraging me to create my show. Justin–buying the equipment and being a big part of why it exists. Lauren & Ale–For stepping up as guest co-hosts from day one. Dad–joining us all on the ride.
