Meet Morgan Canty | Actor & Singer Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Canty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, how do you think about risk?
My life has felt like one big risk. To dare to be myself unapologetically. Risk taking to me It can be scary. Many times for me its been met with great trepidation. But more often than not I’ve found that pushing past the boundaries of that fear that on the other side of that risk there is something beautiful. Growing up being a performer an artist was not encouraged on most levels in my environment. It was sports and school and dont divert. And if you diverted from those two it was a shortcut to being made fun of in school. I realized this growing up but I could never get rid of the performance bug. At a very young age a risk taker was born. From a career stand point its played a big apart. To start from the way i approach writing or singing a song. There’s a risk involved. to the way I approach a role. There’s a risk involved. The way I write a joke. There’s a risk involved. There’s always gonna be someone who doesn’t like your art. And they will let you know it. Which sucks. There’s gonna be times where your art might hurt someone. There are times where funding your art or asking for time off of work might put you behind on paying your rent. All are risks that I’ve had to calculate. One of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was when I decided to bet on myself by deciding to move to Los Angeles to pursue my dream full time. I looked at my life at its current state. There was a level of comfortability but it didn’t feel right. Something felt missing. I knew what it was. I wasn’t ready to give up on my dream. So i just did it. I packed all my belongings into my car and moved. The odds were against me. For most they would have looked at the risk and stayed in the life predictability. But i saw a chance a slim one, but there was a chance. One thing that’s always played a role in the way I take risks is when I get to the end of my life I don’t want to ask myself what would’ve happened if i didn’t give it my all go for it.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
So i am an Actor Singer Song Writer based out of Los Angeles. I like to create art that can either help you escape to another place for some solace or safe way to look life right in the eyes and deal with it. Ive always seen the world in a different way always finding the humor in things and it shows in my art. Ive loved music since the beginning.I learned to sing by imitating the voices i would hear over the radio and to me it felt like a super power. The acting bug hit me when i started watching Snl. There was something about them telling jokes about real life situations that just struck me. It planted a seed in me. Im most proud of the fact that i haven’t let this world take away my dream. And thats hard to do to not quit. To keep going too auditions and you keep getting a no. Or to keep putting out music that not a lot of people listen. To keep working two jobs just so you can barley afford to pay your bills and still have a chance to make it in this city. But to quote Denzel Washington “If you hang around the barbershop long enough, you’ll get a haircut.” The biggest thing i’ve learned is to have faith. The belief in things hoped but not yet seen. That will carry you a long way. You’ll find away when you’r out of options with that mind set. Also learn to laugh. Laughter will keep you sane.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Theres so much to do in this city and im not much of a planner. Im pretty spontaneous. But we’re heading straight to the beach after they land. Theres something about the air there. It sets the mood to relax. While there we would hit up Manhattan beech creamery for the best ice cream sandwich they ever had. That night we would hit up Hollywood boulevard to check out the walk of fame and the TCL. Walk of fame is my favorite place to people watch. At some point grab some street tacos from Angels Tacos. During the week we’d catch a dodger game. I love to laugh so we would hit up a show or two at the laugh factory. Through out the week i would suggest each day we pick a random part of the city and explore its food and culture.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Theres so many id like to thank and shout out that have helped me on my way . First i’ve got to thank God for keeping and protecting me out here. Secondly my Mom, Dad, and my family for their support and love. My friends for being there. Always giving me encouragement. Also my home town of Bristol Tn/Va has been insanely supportive. And lastly all the people that have given me a chance out here. Los Angeles has truly been the city of angels. Ive faced a lot since moving here but for some reason i’ve always had people looking out for me from referrals to agents to a place to stay. Im forever grateful.
