We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan McKensey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, what principle do you value most?
I really value the power of word of mouth/recommendations! It is a special and great thing to have someone recommend or talk about you and your accomplishments on your behalf and it’s super important in uplifting people in your community, especially in the art/creative space. It’s so important to work with and keep people around you to motivate, inspire and support, especially since the people we keep around are a reflection of us. I’ve made it a personal principal that if I have the chance to present or connect someone I know with a relevant opportunity, that I would in hopes that someone else would look out for me that way. There have been several great opportunities, including my current internship, that I have been apart of due to someone else vouching for me and it honestly warms my heart!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I describe myself as a visionary, as the concepts I create literally come from a vision that might’ve been sparked from a photo, a show or music. I think what sets myself apart from other is my attention and level of detail, as it’s the details that really push and elevate a concept. My personal mantra is always to commit myself to a concept, because the more committed you are, the better the outcome. I’m most proud of being able to stay true to myself and my vision, as I feel like my work has certain signifying elements, one of them being my passion for fantasy. I love to have fun in all of my projects and try to decide how I can make it the most extra, unique and overall me. I’ve learned that as long as you’re creating for YOU, that nothing else matters! This was something I’ve come to understand through trial and error, as my first couple projects were not to the caliber I had hoped and it’s easy to fall victim to comparison, but that’s all apart of the growth journey and process!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely would start the day off with grabbing a coffee! My favorite drink from Starbucks is the Salted Caramel Cream cold brew with Salted Caramel cold foam. Then we’d have a visit at the High Museum and check out the different exhibits, maybe get our nails done, do a little shopping in Buckhead or Midtown and then have dinner at this new (to me) restaurant called The Garden Room, which is known for their elaborate interior and aesthetic food platters/drinks. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely want to give a major shoutout to The SCAD Manor, SCAD Savannah’s digital fashion publication. If it hadn’t been for this publication and the entire student media office, I wouldn’t have been able to discover my craft or execute and perfect the numerous fashion editorials that make up my portfolio. This publication has been a huge defining element in my passion, career path, personal growth and development and improving upon my journalistic skills.
