We had the good fortune of connecting with Morris Ellis, Pablo Murillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morris, Pablo, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Morris: Our thought process: make something out of nothing.
What should our readers know about your business?
Aguas Locas is a 100% natural premium aguas frescas brand. We use all-natural ingredients and make all of our drinks without sugar, using just a touch of homemade agave nectar. We add superfoods like cinnamon, chia and mint to make our aguas extra healthy and separate ourselves from the typical sugar-filled drinks you may be used to. We created a drink that can be enjoyed at all times of the day, a drink that is delicious and also extremely healthy. And probably the best part: we have boozey options too! We used our bartending experience to create perfectly crafted cocktails using the same ingredients from our aguas frescas. Aguas Locas is truly for the entire familia. This idea was born in the pandemic, as Pablo was making aguas frescas for his 3-year old daughter and experimenting with ways to make the drinks healthier and without sugar. He contacted me (Morris) with an idea of bottling his creations and selling him to his friends and family. Having a background in graphic design, I was immediately drawn in to this new idea and started brainstorming ways we could turn this into a real brand. A little bit of research and a few handcrafted margaritas later, Aguas Locas was born: pandemic born, familia run, and handmade “con amor.” To this day we have done all of our marketing and sales through social media.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a funny question to ask during peak pandemic time, but I would have to say any trip to LA is incomplete without a beach day, a hike, and some street tacos. My typical tour-guide itinerary usually includes a Downtown LA trip to Grand Central Market & Little Tokyo, with some cool Arts District bars/brewery stops along the ay. LA is great for museums too. Topanga State Park has some awesome trails with ocean views. I love walking along the Venice canals and catching sunset on the pier too. Street tacos can be found all over LA but I would like to shoutout my (Westside) favorite “El Primo Tacos” stand on Lincoln & Brooks. Great with some Aguas Locas!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Aguas Locas would not be possible if it weren’t for everyone who went out of their way to support us. From the moment we began this project, we received a tremendous amount of love from our friends and family. They shared our Instagram posts, ordered our product and told their friends about us. From the beginning, we knew Aguas Locas would be a brand that gave back, and we always want to keep our familia close and show them our appreciation. We started Aguas Locas during the first lockdown here in LA. We were all confused, scared, and worried about the future, but we decided to make the most of it and spread love and positivity through a delicious and healthy product that everyone could enjoy and feel like they were part of something. To our friends and familia reading this, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
