We had the good fortune of connecting with Mozado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mozado, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue a career as an artist for the age-old reason of wanting to go against the grain of what society tells you you can be. I grew up in like an upper-middle class family in an upper-middle class town and as I got towards the end of high school I started to see how everyone’s paths were more or less laid out for them. Go to college, get a 9-5, usually in corporate America, even though its not something most kids had the slightest actual interest in. I saw a lot of people give up on their dreams so easily and I just wanted to be an example of someone who didn’t give up and went after it. I feel like very few people enjoy the professional capitalist system we have now but they adhere to it because it’s safe, people like and need money, and people feel like they have no other choice. If you look really closely, you can see that the system preys on society in a lot of ways and simply existing as a true and authentic artist actually flies in the face of that system as it introduces all kinds of concepts that challenge the core principles of capitalism. It goes a lot deeper than that for me and gets into philosophies on the racism and the various forms of inequality as they relate to capitalism but for the sake of keeping this interview from spiraling I’ll just say I decided to pursue art as a way to protest and resist capitalism.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I make music. I make it from start to finish and while I collaborate with other artists from time to time I can and do usually take on the full creative process myself. I think that’s one thing that sets me apart from other artists is I produce, write, mix, and master my own music. In an industry where it’s common for the top artists to have teams of people making their art, I am proud that I can compete with that level of quality all on my own. I not proud because I think that makes me better than anyone else or because of independence for the sake of independence. But I do feel it makes the art more honest, more authentic and less for the purpose of just selling. Creating music from start to finish allows me to see my ideas through making the art a more honest, more thorough representation of myself.

Its never been easy as an independent artist. We’re constantly dealing with lack of funds, work-life balance issues, and competing with the monopolies and gatekeepers that control the industry. All this while not quite fitting into the overarching capitalist system. But I’ve learned a ton from being an artist. Things like valuing the process more than the result or destination. Trusting my tastes, my opinions, and my intuitions. I’ve learned that I can be anything I want to be and a ton of other life-changing lessons. I honestly don’t think I would be anywhere close to the same person I am today if I never pursued art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to the Boston Commons for some pleasant vibes. I think the commons is the oldest public park in the US. From there we could stroll Newbury street for some great food and drinks outside and maybe some shopping (depends on the friend). Then straight to the Cape to some beaches and a fat lobster roll.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m always gonna be grateful to my parents for raising me to question the status quo and be myself. My dad raised me to understand what it means to be black in America. He taught me work ethic and due-diligence. And my mom taught me to love who I am, to go easy on myself, and to never underestimate my abilities.
