We had the good fortune of connecting with MULEKE and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MULEKE, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was raised Copperas Cove, Texas, where I graduated high school. I was a member of our marching band, which instilled my love for music. I feel like being from the South has really impacted my hospitality towards others and my ethics. I don’t ever want to lose sight of where I came from. I moved to Los Angeles 7 years ago following my mother’s passing. I feel more determined than ever to pursue my passion. If not for me, than for her. I always wanted to sing like my mom, and I feel like I’m tasked with spreading her love as far as I can through my music.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been navigating depression for about 20 years now. I’ve also had other life challenges, like loneliness and death. My goal is to use my platform to inspire those who’ve had similar experiences as me by turning my pain into light. I express myself through my art by singing or writing new music or poetry. For me, it’s all about turning those life experiences into motivation for myself and others. Life continues to be hard, but I’m learning the importance of being present. That’s where the idea of WAIT came from. My brand and messaging are all about patience. When I first moved to LA, I had no idea what I was doing. But, by throwing myself out there and just doing it, I’ve managed to find footing and direction. While in the moment or looking back over a few months, it doesn’t seem like I’m moving at times. But I know that I’m much further than I ever saw myself, and my accomplishments are bigger than I can see. I have music distributed all over the world, and the responses to my poetry have been overwhelming. My achievements required patience, and I hope my fans understand the power of patience as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to show visitors the things I enjoy regularly in LA. I think the best experience of the city is the local experience. We’d have to go on a hike to the Griffith Observatory. That view of the city changed my life. I’d also take them to the beach. You can’t experience LA without going to the beach. There’s so many great places to eat – we’d certainly eat well every day. The night life in West Hollywood is unmatched – that’d definitely be on the itinerary.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to all of my friends and family that show support and remind me how talented and special I am. I think about the kind words and support from them frequently. They really keep me going every day.
