Meet Mycala Baker | Singer/Songwriter & Dancer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mycala Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mycala, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic career because it was something that made me feel joy, love, confident, and fulfilled. I tried other careers and each time I always found myself being drawn to the arts. It’s been apart of my life since I was a little girl and it feels unnatural for me to do anything outside of the arts. Being a creative is a huge part of my identity now that I’ve accepted it has always been something I was meant to do.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I identify as a singer, songwriter, dancer, content-creator, and yogi. What I think sets me apart from others is my spirit. Obviously we are all unique in our own ways, but I do feel that those who are able to engage with me can feel that I come from a pure and genuine place with everything that I do. I am most proud of not giving up on myself regardless of not being where I thought I would be in life at this point. I’m excited to continue working on my craft and growing as an artist. Honestly, I have to thank my friends and family for helping me get to where I am today. It’s taken a collective effort to execute my artistic projects and is not something I would have been able to do on my own. The challenges I faced were mostly internal and me doubting myself at times. Thankfully I have a support system who believes in me and my art which is what helps me overcome those challenges. I want the world to know that my story is ever evolving and the Mycala they see today, will not be the same Mycala tomorrow. I’m constantly learning how to be better than I was before which is something I’d like to inspire others to do as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a super laid back person so I definitely want to spend a beach day with them in Malibu. The Santa Monica Pier is another one of my favorite spots to hang out especially if we get on some of the rides. Some of my go to restaurants here are Cafe Gratitude, Stuff I Eat, The Grain Cafe, and Fixins. Before the recent LA fires, the Eaton Canyon falls and Runyon Canyon were a few of my favorite nature spots. On Sundays I would take them to Leimert Park to enjoy some of the vendors there and the week would not be complete without bringing them to a Bikram Yoga class. LA has so many gems that is impossible to explore in just one week!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my dance family Stroll Groove. Stroll Groove was the first group I got introduced to when I moved to Los Angeles back in 2017. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and I see them as brothers and sisters to me. Each person has played a huge role in my evolution of being an artist because they inspire me to continue working on my craft and they have always seen the light in me that I couldn’t always see. I would also like to acknowledge my friends and family who have always supported me throughout the ups and downs of my journey.
