We had the good fortune of connecting with Mykey Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mykey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have chosen the artistic/creative path because it’s always been something that has relaxed my mind. It’s always something I have enjoyed doing since I was a small child. It’s always been something that I am use to. It’s a comfort zone where it’s not always comfortable because you never stop learning and it’s always something new. Not everyone is comfortable with things constantly changing or having to be constantly learning. It sure has always been an enjoyment for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the type of artist who is comfortable doing any kind of makeup that someone is looking for. Anywhere from really soft and natural makeup to bold and colorful makeup. I am also the type of makeup artist who can create any makeup look on any skin tone. Not many people can say they can execute color matching on every skin color there is. I got to where I am at today with lots of practice and networking. Constant practice on myself and clients of all skin types and colors. Being able to be diverse has helped me as an artist to learn so much more than I did starting out. Networking has helped me reach out and connect with others in the similar community I am in. It has me be able to connect with others in the world to guide me in the direction to where I would like to go in my career. Some lessons I have learned along the way is not everyone is going to support you. Some people might end up changing their point of view down the road, some may not. It’s definitely hard, but it’s also something I’ve been very use to in my short years I have lived so far. Getting to this point in my life/career wasn’t entirely easy, but I definitely found the right support along the way to help me push myself to get to the goals I am creating for myself. I want the world to know that you CAN do what you want. Take a step back, think about all of the different directions you can take to get to where you want to be. Do not ever be afraid to ask for help, wether that is peers or Google, ask for help. Don’t let others hold you back. Keep who supports you close by and don’t give up. Listen to all of the pros and cons too and take them into consideration for your next moves. Everyone starts somewhere. I, myself, have came from nothing at one point.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I only moved out to the California area back at the end of June of 2024, but I have been to a handful of places since then. I would definitely recommend planning to stop at Santa Monic Beach, The Last Book Store, Universal Studios, Rodeo Drive, anywhere that has boba, any of the small coffee businesses. There are a TON of malls to go to that have many stores that is for everyone, indoor and outdoor. If you are looking for places to go to for night time, I would for sure recommend the clubs in West Hollywood.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve always have had major support through certain people. Those people KNOW exactly who they are. Wether they are new or old in my life, they are a major support in my life and have always encouraged me to keep moving forward and do what I love and has never given me any negative vibes in return. They have always been happy for me, give me motivation and positivity to keep doing me. It’s always inspiring to me.
