We had the good fortune of connecting with N. Roy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi N., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
This is actually my third venture to date. I’m always driven to start a business in an area that I’m passionate about area where a profitable niche can be carved out. When the two pieces come together I know that my passion will keep me motivated to push through the hard work and eventually it will lead to a profitable venture. With this particular business, More Business Less Problems, my motivation was the area of problem solving.

I’ve worked with leading consulting firms, with leading digital agencies and have employed consultants from all over the world. While the traditional consulting model has its place I find there is a large gap where the people in business need more specific problem solving solutions. They need someone to help them focus on the actual core of the problem they are facing and quickly give them a blueprint to start putting a solution in place. This can range from how best to enter a new market to pushing an initiative through with the board of directors. This focus on core problem solving is at the heart of my venture.

My objective is to allow managers and entrepreneurs to devote their energy towards making solutions come to life rather than worrying about how to solve problems in their precious spare time. The idea of solving the core of a problem to produce positive impact quickly is what I refer to as Micro-Consulting. It takes the core of the traditional consulting model but applies it with laser like focus with the goal of bringing action rather than strategy meetings.

This is what led me to start this particular venture, I want my clients to do More Business and have Less Problems.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets my business apart is the fact that I’m bringing a new approach to the world of business consulting and problem solving. Having worked across 10 different countries with countless industries and clients I’ve come to appreciate a very simple fact: action drives business forwards. A lot of the time the best of intentions are left to become stale in the meeting room while people discuss strategy and miss the core of the problem.

I’ve taken my experience and created a framework for Micro-Consulting. The concept revolves around a consultative, interview style session with a client that unlocks core insights into the business problem and the context surrounding it. My framework facilitates the identification of the client’s core problem (the problem area that if fixed will have maximum impact) and gives them a blueprint on how to make the solution to that problem a reality. The goal of my Micro-Consulting sessions is not to bill man-hours but instead to leverage a well defined snapshot of the business situation to give the client their blueprint in under 90 minutes.

My experience has made me appreciate the actual people who work within organizations. So my consulting business focuses on helping the individual as opposed to putting the individual’s company first. My framework is tailored towards understanding the context of the problem from the perspective of the person who is responsible for fixing it (the client). This is because if the employee or entrepreneur can get the blueprint to solve their problem it means they have a step-by-step manual on how to make it come to life given the specific context they are facing.

While the solution to poor customer retention could be mechanically similar for a Manger and a new Entrepreneur, the manager needs to bring their director and multiple teams on board to make the solution come to life; the entrepreneur would need to convince partners and brief agencies. This is where the idea of contextualizing the solution comes into place because the path towards making a solution come to life varies greatly depending on the individual (hero) who owns that responsibility.

The model of micro-consulting is something I’ve developed after having the privilege of working with every type of company from a dairy farm to a food products company to airlines to banks to governments and more. Traditional consultants will recycle the same solution over and over again but the goal of micro-consulting is to empower the people in a company to make a difference for the company; and of course take their due credit.

Why did I take the time to develop this business model? Well to be quite honest I’ve always been obsessed with figuring things out. It drove me to study mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon and through all my experiences it has driven me to want to help people figure out solutions to the business problems they are facing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
At present I’m living in Dubai so my itinerary for them would be to venture off the beaten path. There is some amazing food from around the world in Dubai and traditional adventure experiences that can’t be found anywhere else. And of course once you have had a desert adventure there is nothing like winding down at a sunset pool bar in the Palm.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a lot of people who have guided and supported me along the way. The most important people would be my parents and sister, ever since I was a child they always encouraged me to explore new ideas. My father in particular mentored me in understanding what it takes to bring a venture to life from a management and financial planning perspective. My wife has been a stringent supporter of mine and has not only partnered with me in an eCommerce venture but also works with me to refine ideas and test out concepts. I need to shout out a mentor of mine, Alexander Rauser, who took me under his wing to show me how to use digital products to drive business impact. And last but not least my friends from Dubai to America who have been with me from the very start and offered nothing but encouragement along the way.
