We had the good fortune of connecting with Nadine Artemis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nadine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My fascination with plants started when I was child. I would play for hours in the woods with plants. This joy was further developed in 9th grade when a book sort of fell from the library shelf into my hands as I was preparing for the science fair. The book was full of ancient Egypt style cosmetics and perfume recipes using essential oils. My mom and I drove to the city to the health food store and bought a handful of essential oils. We recreated L’Air Du Temps by Nina Ricci from those oils. It was an exciting project and my first success in the world of botanical science. Later, when I was in university, I was shocked to discover that some of my favorite products, like cucumber face toner, did not contain any cucumber in it at all. It was just a bottle of synthetic chemicals! I knew that there was a pure botanical world out there, so I started making pure perfumes and some skin care items. To be ensorcelled in the scents of sandalwood and jasmine, surrounded by decanters and bottles of botanicals… I was in heaven.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Living Libations helps people reclaim their self-care so that their health and beauty are in their own hands. As society becomes more aware of issues with synthetic chemicals, people begin to simplify their lives and unindustrialize the products they use. It is at this point that many people discover essential oils and Living Libations. Pure, organic plant essences and oils more resemble food than medicine. I apply them to my skin, eat them, clean with them, put them in my laundry, and put them on and in my son. They boost my immune, support my concentration, and uplift my spirit. I like to call botanicals our best bathing attendants, though they are more than that – they are our best life attendants.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My home is the verdant forests of Ontario, Canada, although I delight in the magnetism of the deep desert and LA’s electric vibe. I love beginning my day at one of the west side farmers’ markets to replenish our supply of fresh fruit and vegetables. Southern California has some of the most luscious and abundant produce in the world. It is all about watermelon right now! I always stop by Moon Juice on Rose. My friend Amanda offers the highest vibrational fresh juices and snacks. Her Strawberry Rose Geranium Bars are delicately divine and so delicious. The garden patio at Plant Food + Wine is my favourite for an evening soiree. The ambiance is magical, even when it is a cool evening. The beach is only steps from our Living Libations flagship boutique and sunset is the best show in town. My favourite way to end the day is with a walk through the Venice canals and on Venice Beach. I sungaze as the sun goes down and enjoy an ethereal moon rise.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to the perfection of the plant kingdom. My hands serve at the pleasure of plants and flowers, the original owners of essences and oils. This dream team, the intelligent joy-juice of flora are the muse for all Libation creations. My life has been a total immersion in beautiful botanical essences, and they have taught me, and are currently still teaching me, much more than any one teacher or book could teach about health, beauty, and immunity.
