Meet Nalu | Recording Artist, Singer, Songwriter & Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nalu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nalu, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was born into a musical family where expression was always nurtured. Creativity was a natural part of life. From an early age, I was encouraged to explore my own voice and passions, learning to play guitar at just 8 years old and enjoying the freedom to create. This foundation planted a deep love for music and storytelling that has grown with me, especially as I’ve journeyed from South Africa to Los Angeles. My sound blends RnB, jazz, soul and acoustic influences, reflecting themes of love, self-discovery and womanhood. Each song I create is a part of my own healing process and an invitation for others to connect, feel seen and find empowerment in their own stories.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art dives into themes like authenticity, self-discovery, love, truth, pain, loss, self-love and freedom – all the things that come with being a young African woman navigating life in a twenties. Moving from South Africa to LA was such a massive culture shock, but it was exactly what I needed to break out of my comfort zone. LA pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t imagined and that journey, completing my postgrad while working, living alone and staying true to myself, makes me proud.
When it comes to my creative process, I can’t give away too much of the secret sauce! It’s always evolving, just like I am. I’m drawn to a blend of genres, mixing RnB, jazz, and soul with my South African roots to create something that feels authentic to me. At the end of the day, I want my music to be a place where people feel seen, where they can find comfort or clarity, even if it’s just for a few minutes. I believe music has this incredible power to heal, and if I can leave something behind that helps others feel more connected to themselves and to each other then I’ll feel like I’ve done something meaningful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting from my hometown, Cape Town in South Africa, I’d want to give them the best week ever in LA, blending a bit of home with the city’s vibrant culture. We’d kick things off at Santa Monica Pier, where the beach vibe reminds me of Cape Town’s Waterfront. We could grab some fish tacos at The Albright and enjoy the ocean views, followed by a stroll along the boardwalk to set the tone for the week.
On Day 2, we’d dive into the arts and culture of Downtown LA, starting with breakfast at Grand Central Market, where the fresh juices and diverse food stalls feel a bit like the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town. After exploring the Arts District with its street art and galleries, we’d indulge in dinner at Bestia for some amazing Italian food. Day 3 would be all about nature and views; we’d hike up to Griffith Observatory for breathtaking sights of the city and the Hollywood sign, reminiscent of hiking up Table Mountain. We’d relax with a picnic at Griffith Park and then find a cozy spot in Silver Lake for drinks at The Reservoir, enjoying the sunset over the water.
For Day 4, we’d immerse ourselves in LA’s music scene, starting at The Echo for a live show that captures that same electric energy I love about Cape Town’s local gigs. Afterward, we’d unwind at The Varnish, a speakeasy where we could sip craft cocktails in a trendy atmosphere. Day 5 would take us to Venice Beach and Abbot Kinney, where the eclectic shops and street performers remind me of Cape Town’s Long Street. We’d grab lunch at Gjusta and spend the afternoon soaking up the sun on the beach, ending the day with a beach bonfire to relax.
On Day 6, we’d explore art and shopping at The Getty Center, marveling at the art and gardens—a beautiful space that captures the serenity found in Kirstenbosch. Afterward, we’d head to Melrose Avenue for some shopping and street art, followed by a must-have dinner at Jon & Vinny’s for a cozy pizza night. Finally, on our last day, we’d keep things chill with a brunch at République, then visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). We’d wrap up the week with a sunset walk along the Venice canals, soaking in the beauty and reflecting on our adventures. This itinerary blends the lively spirit of LA with the warmth and vibrancy of my beautiful city, Cape Town, making it feel like a home away from home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to shout out my grandmother, Jocelyn – she’s honestly woven into every part of my creative journey. Growing up, I spent hours with her watching musicals like Cats, The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago, just getting lost in the magic and emotion of those stories. Hearing her and my parents sing hymns in church gave me this deep love for harmony and for creating something beautiful. Family has always been at the core of my life and my work, and through music and art, I feel so connected to them and to God. Creating feels like a way to honour where I come from and keep those traditions alive. It’s a constant reminder of the love and support that’s shaped who I am today.
