Meet Nancy Boyd | Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind any of my successes is kindness. I wouldn’t be anywhere if I didn’t treat people I met with kindness. In the film industry, our collaborators are people we spend many, many hours with. I wouldn’t want to spend that time with someone who didn’t treat me with kindness and respect and I want to give the same to everyone I meet. As simple as it sounds, tensions can run high and we can forget to be kind. I think that my ability to keep kind and compassionate under stress is what places the opportunities before me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to tell stories about women being fully who they are and embracing it! My feature film I directed, Lady Parts, written by Bonnie Gross, is all about our main character taking control of her health and her life after undergoing vaginal surgery. Women’s health issues aren’t nearly talked about as much as they should be. They are kind of treated as this thing we should never talk about in mixed company or at all. I know a lot of daughters who’s mothers and grandmothers have gone through various health issues that they never told them about because it wasn’t polite. This kind of attitude is not empowering young women to make the choices they need to have full lives and advocate for themselves. We made Lady Parts because we want the culture to change and people to feel like they can speak up and speak out about their bodies.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place to take anyone is the Moonlight Rollerway! I love rollerskating and it’s filled with film history. Even if you aren’t a fantastic skater, it’s fun to get out there and see other skaters doing spins and dancing around you. I also love the restaurant Met Him at a Bar, it’s such good pasta! And then we would have to go to The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica to watch a classic movie of some sort.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve so much credit in my story. They are creative people who see a story in everything. They raised me to know that everyone has a story and to take the time to listen because everyone deserves to tell their story. My parents have supported me so much along my journey. From watching all of my rough cuts and posting supportive things about me on Facebook to sending me ice cream on the days it is most needed.
