We had the good fortune of connecting with Nasera Alayon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nasera, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
One mistake that creative thinkers make is giving power to every piece of advice received. Allow yourself to agree or disagree, to know the difference between critique versus criticism, and when to allow it to influence your emotions. I have pulled off my most rewarding risks against the odds of other’s opinions.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My artistic and business career was never something anyone could have predicted. As a young child I was captivated by type, and what I know now to be instances of branding. As it turns out, an observational child can make a talented designer. I had a natural love for learning, quiet details, paper, rock and roll. All factors that would culminate to create my greatest strengths later. Softcore Studio, my independent design studio, was founded in 2017 after years of design work for multiple industries from music to cannabis. I wanted more than typical agency life and its hierarchies. I was tired of being asked to turn down my feminism because it was upsetting the guys at the office when my work was better than theirs. Having my own studio meant that I could rewrite what leadership in design looked like. It turned out to be the best decision that I ever made. Today Softcore specializes in product design and brand strategy, with a large majority of female identifying and/or LGBT clients. You attract what you put out, I guess! One serendipitous moment that changed the course of my life was meeting a young beauty entrepreneur on a date. I drew some ideas on the back of a bar napkin and agreed to help design some packaging for their company. Flash forward to today and that brand, Freck Beauty, is a multi-million dollar line, I am a part owner, and we are now best friends. Sometimes things are just cosmic. I am most proud and excited for an upcoming 2021 launch we have planned with a major retailer. All I can say right now is that the world will be seeing a lot more of Freck.
