We had the good fortune of connecting with Nasrin Moghadasian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nasrin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
To answer this question, I have to start from the beginning, my background, so you can understand how I got to the point of opening my practice.
I’ve always been motivated by my passion for my profession and the desire to be independent. And my desire to be independent stems from being born and raised in Iran. I didn’t have any experience before I left Iran at 22-years-old. I had never traveled alone. I had never even left the country before I came here. I didn’t speak English, I didn’t have any family here, and I didn’t understand the culture. I came here with my two-year-old daughter and $3,000 in my hand. I never drove in Iran. In the first few weeks here, I got my driver’s license. And in 30 days I started working as a housekeeper.
In my second year in the US, I started going to business school at night, worked full-time as a housekeeper, and part-time at a pizza place. In two years’ time, I got my associate degree in accounting.
The hardest part of all this was leaving my daughter in daycare from 7am to 10pm. I developed very bad migraines from the stress.
Before I graduated from business school, I started looking for a job. I was looking to work in a doctor’s office. Because I am so blessed from God, I got the job in a chiropractic office. I didn’t know anything about the chiropractic profession at the time. I stopped working as a housekeeper and at the pizza place and started working full time in the chiropractic office. It was there that I learned about chiropractic care. I started getting treatment from my boss, and my migraines slowly dissipated.
It was then that I realized I wanted to be a chiropractor. But it was very difficult. I was still working on my permanent residency, but I still had to work and go back to school, working full-time and going to school at night to get my pre-requisites.
This was once again really hard for me because I had to leave my daughter in daycare again. The sacrifice and compromise my daughter went through is still extremely difficult to think about to this day.
Over the next four years I got my pre-requisites and applied to chiropractic school. I got accepted.
I had to quit my job. It was hard. My husband was against it, because I wouldn’t be able to make money and would have a big student loan. But I was very motivated and committed to do this.
So I started chiropractic school.
I had to learn the medical language and anatomy, and between my classroom work and spending time In the anatomy lab, it really ended up being far more than a full-time commitment- I was giving myself to this study every single day.
School wasn’t the only hurdle. The Board exam was another big challenge. But I finished my school and passed my three boards. During my 9th semester, I finished all my prerequisites and now I could go outside and if anyone hired me, I could work. And I did. I found a doctor in Manhattan Beach and started working with him.
In my last semester I worked while studying for my fourth Board exam, but I was also dealing with a health issue and got very sick. I got diagnosed with endometriosis. It was malignant. I had to have surgery right away, because my doctor want to make sure the cancer doesn’t spread out. Also, he didn’t know the intensity of it..
I couldn’t avoid the surgery for very long, but I also couldn’t postpone my part fourth exam, because then I would have to wait another 9 months.
So I took my exam and then went for surgery. I wouldn’t be able to work for 4 months.
It was at this time that I started thinking about life’s purpose! It was my opportunity to re-evaluate my life. My family and I sacrificed so much. This wasn’t time for me to be scared or hesitate. I realize that I was here a reason. That all the sacrifice and the hard work and learning, had come together in this time, and place to put me into the position to be able to help my patients. To be able to treat them, and to teach them what they need to know about their own bodies to live a happier healthier, more pain-free life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business-my practice, and my profession has truly changed my life. one of the things I love most about it, that I get to use my extensive knowledge and study of the human body and a specialized adjustment techniques to change the lives of other people. I take the customize approved to each and every patient and of, each patient has different, but I found that there is always a way that we can work together to figure out how to improve someone’s health, lesson their pain- and therefore improve the quality of their. And truly it just bring me such joy to see the results that my patience get and to see how their lives can change overtime. I specialize in pediatric and pregnancy, and I also have a special training in dealing with TMJ, sinuses, and the cranium. So, as you can see., with some of patients, we are together every step of the way from before they even have their first child, as they are beginning to build their families,- and then we all become part of one big body care, spine and nerve Center family along the way. In fact, it is a family business in every sense of world.-my daughter was inspired by my result, and how she saw that I was able to change people’s lives in such a positive way. Should become a chiropractor as well and we have a spin the last 14 years working together to make our practice run like a family.- with love and, for our patience, and our community inside and out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to our beautiful beach to ride a bike. I would take them to the harbor to do water activities. We’ll go to Riviera Village for good food and shopping. When we are done exploring Redondo Beach, we’ll head to Hermosa beach, Manhattan beach and then we would definitely need to end the evening which show at comedy magic club.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Rotary International, the community-based volunteer organization. Rotary motivates me in all the steps of my journey. They are my inspiration.
