We had the good fortune of connecting with Natasha Remi Suzuki and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natasha Remi, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I started music lessons when I was a toddler; I was so small that my first recital, I couldn’t yet play the piano so I performed on the triangle. It didn’t take me long to realize I had been gifted with the ability to communicate in another language: music! So I took piano lessons, voice lessons, and trained in dance, all while singing in school choirs over the years.
I was pretty aloof in high school, but the path to study music made itself very clear to me and things just fell into place while I was figuring out college. When I had graduated, I think I had very different ideas of what I wanted to do in music, but over the course of my twenties and thirties, my work and career have truly blossomed in ways that I could not have anticipated and I am really enjoying it!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I graduated from Berklee College of Music, songwriting music was more “for fun.” Since moving back to Los Angeles, I realized that it was much more than that. It was an opportunity to share my stories, which I believe is important in others being able to feel seen. To feel a connection to an artist and their music is to feel like a part of you that you cannot always express easily has a safe outlet.
My journey has been all about the evolution of the music in reflection of how I have grown as a person. I think choosing to release music in different genres and showing that I have many sides to my writing is reflective of the many sides we all have as individuals. I believe this is something that does set me apart. As humans, I do believe that we strive to become better versions of ourselves and I feel that my art does show that work.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in the last few years; I truly believe that as musicians, we never stop learning about our craft. And it feels like all the work I have been putting into my growth as a vocalist is coming into fruition.
I don’t think anything about this career path is easy. Artists often joke that once a week, we announce we will quit. But we never do, because we know that the music is what most fulfills our souls.
If I could ask the world for one thing, it would be to check out my most recent single release. This song, entitled “Soul Speak,” truly captures the self-discovery process that I, and whom I believe are many others, have been experiencing since the pandemic. Again, I share my stories so that others can share theirs and my hope is that this particular tune can be an inspiration to others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is such a fun question! I LOVE foodie adventures so I have lists on lists of places to eat so I would work around that; the touristy attractions would obviously have to be based on food plans. I really like museums, so I would plan for a few of those. But really, I think going to the quieter beaches is the best. You get some city life plus the chill vibes.
I do think because Los Angeles has such a wide variety of “moods,” if you will, I would do something along the lines of:
Hollywood Day
Orange County Day
Westside Day
South Bay Day – with extra beach time
And within those, throw in a comedy club and some music venues.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been very lucky that my family supports me the way they do; the sacrifices made in this career path do not solely effect me, but rather, all those around me and my family has handled my whimsical decisions quite well over time.
Also, every music teacher I have ever had has pushed my in ways that I may not have always enjoyed or agreed with, but have definitely made me a better singer and musician.
