We had the good fortune of connecting with S.A.G.A. Emcee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Thanks for joining us today. So to start – can you talk to us about why you  chose to pursue a creative career?
The short answer is that I wasn’t very good at school. Now I’m not one of those people that think college is a complete waste of time, but I don’t believe it’s for everyone. I had a hard time focusing on what the teachers were teaching and doing homework on subjects I didn’t care about was a struggle. I enjoy learning but most of the things they teach you early on isn’t always practical or fulfilling. At least it wasn’t to me anyway. When I started writing poems and raps as an outlet for what I was feeling and seeing in the world, it really clicked. I already loved music for being there as an escape, a vibe, and a way to heal. So I thought why not put my point of view and introspection on record so people can vibe and connect to it as well. There’s something about stringing the right words and phrases together over an instrumental that is so satisfying to me. I hear a melody or a beat and it demands my attention. I feel some type of emotion and that turns into words on a page that I then use to paint a picture. I also felt the landscape in Hip Hop changing in a way that being genuine is often missing from songs and artists. A false narrative is portrayed and the listeners get the wrong message or idea of what is real. I want to inspire, be inspired, and express realness. All while mixing in some party and bullshit of course.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Hip Hop artist my music is a based on my experiences and the world around me. Whether it be about social commentary, being a Dad, my life, or just spitting bars, it’s all in there. I feel every artist wants to be different from the rest. Don’t get me wrong I do too in some ways but my reality as an artist is more focused on just being true to self. I don’t try to sound like this or that but thats up to the listener if they want to compare me. I’m a collection of different genres, experiences, and emotions. I try to convey that in my music the best I can without compromising who I am for the sake of comparison or fame. I’m nowhere near where I want to be professionally because there’s so much to learn and create but, I’m still proud of my body of work so far. There’s definitely been ups and downs but you got to keep moving forward with your passions if you want to reach your goals. A big lesson I’ve learned is that there isn’t one right answer or only one way of doing something especially in music. Working with as many talents big and small is key for success in this game. My artist name S.A.G.A. is an acronym for survival against great animosity. Hate it or love it I will deliver as much truth as I can while being creative and fresh in the process.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would have to hit up Pepe’s in Alhambra for some super packed carne asada hard shell tacos or maybe Cook’s Tortas in Monterey Park I cant decide at the moment. Go to 7 Leaves for some Thai Tea with boba, sit somewhere to talk and people watch. Korean BBQ or sushi is always good. Personally I can eat breakfast anytime so I’d throw in some High Life breakfast burritos. And yes I will add McDonald’s sausage McMuffin with egg sorry not sorry. 38 degrees in Alhambra, Angel City or EightyTwo in LA or for a pint and some games. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I don’t think it would be fair for me to shoutout one person or thing… Like all of us, my journey so far is a compilation of trial and error. High and low moments and the ones in between. So I would have to shoutout (support or not) my family, friends who have come and gone, and anyone whose face I can remember vividly. Of course all the great talents in music and literature that came before. Also as egocentric as it may sound maybe most importantly my ever evolving self. Without me at the wheel the journey never is. I don’t think people give themselves enough credit for the success and overcoming failures as we should.
