Meet Nate Calima | Entrepreneur, Director, & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate Calima and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nate, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Getting over the fear of rejection and having a dominate mentality while creating attention toward the brand. You have to show up in order to grow up. At the same time, wisdom and faith uninvested in labor and courage is wasted. The ability to adapt quickly to new situations is important. The President has half the people absolutely love them and half the people absolutely detest them (and it may be for a completely false reason) however that is what it takes in order to reach the highest levels of success. In the beginning, it is much like an space shuttle taking off. You must create a lot of momentum and thrust with the right actions and right people even when you aren’t being paid on your efforts. You must be willing to be underpaid and underappreciated in the marketplace in order to one day be overpaid and have massive attention that you can convert into creating the lifestyle of your dreams.
Learn how to add value to the marketplace and support the ventures of others. For example, when Filipino – American advocate Lyle Del Mundo asks us to participate in events we do it because of his long history in serving the community. Because of that, he introduced us to influencers such as Bella Poarch and Bretman Rock. He did not have to do that but it’s because we continuously serve each other in order to create excellence. If you continue to show up with courage and add value then eventually you will become the brand and repeat the process with others on the same path as you.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A little known fact was that I was a part of a local news station in my teenage years. From the editing room and field reporter I had a passion for entertainment/media and even took classes on TV production. I saw it more of a passion rather that a career because I knew that business is the way to sustain a legacy. If you notice, the most successful in showbiz understands the creative part but also investing and using business skills in order to create success that lasts a lifetime.
I have an ability to utilize both my creative side and business side. I’m proud that we are starting a new educational platform on natecalima.com along with a new book i’m writing that is further boosted by community involvement, product promotions, and entertainment ventures. It creates an ecosystem of that feeds one another.
You must learn to have thick skin and emotionally detach yourself from the answer and the peanut gallery. As you dominate and create attention you will have people with a crab mentality who will do whatever they can to bring you down because it is way easier to criticize than create. You are the sum average of the people you closely associate with. Constantly ask yourself if the people around you are contributing either to your journey of happiness, fulfillment, & marketplace domination.
For example, when the Filipino American Creative Council was created it was organized within a few weeks. It took individuals (C-Tru, Richard Mendoza, Sean Afable, Krista Kleiner, Brad Baldia, Michael San Juan, Rose Aquino-Valeriano, and myself Nate Calima) with unique talents to come together in order to take immediate action. It wouldn’t of happened if it weren’t for the decade of experience of each individual member who had their own network of contacts
The list of the first batch of creative council cultural ambassadors include Dante Basco, Darion Basco, Krista Kleiner, Bailey Munoz, Troy Laureta, Ruby Ibarra, Princess Punzalan, Francis Lara Ho, Arnel Pineda, Jake Zyrus, Phil Tayag, Clint Ramos, Geena Rocero, Byron Atienza, Josie Smith Malave, Vallerie Castillo-Archer, Regina Aquino, C-TRU, Shamus Murphy, Nate Calima, Reggie Lee, Sean Michael Afable, Diane Paragas, Nicole Ponseca, Roslynn Alba Cobarrubias, Josie Harrison, Tom Cunanan, Jeppy Paraiso, & Heart Defensor. With such an influential group, many said the time frame was too short, however people tend to judge actions based on their own abilities rather that the abilities of the champions who are pushing things forward. This group of individuals now has a network of creatives who are building each other up.
Because of the Filipino American Creative Council we were able to launch the new Hollywood Chamber and get together to produce a new movie to be shot in the United States and the Philippines. This wouldn’t of happened if we did not lean on each others ability as creatives and businesspeople.
The key is to simply start and take roles with courage and find mentors who can light the path. You are paid based on the size of the problem you can solve or the perceived value of the marketplace. You may have an incredible talent but you must be able to get enough attention in order to raise the value. This journey is not always easy but i’m telling you it is worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Yamashiro Hollywood! One of the Fil-Am creative council cultural ambassadors is Chef Vallerie Castillo-Archer and she truly made that a special place with the team over there. With its incredible view and food you can’t go wrong! If we were going to do casual outing I love going to La Ddong Ggo in Koreatown which is owned and operated by amazing friends. You can share stories, discuss the future, and have a great time while pouring bottles of soju. Los Angeles county is full of adventure if you are around the right people and I could go on and on about one of the greatest counties in the world!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people to thank from my entrepreneurial journey and the entertainment journey that i’m bound to miss so many but know that I appreciate you. My faith is gives me a solid foundation and keeps me on the right path. Being host & national director of Continental Miss Philippines America with Chairman Jo Verte and Sean Afable helped me navigate the glitz, glamour, and seedy side of showbiz. C-TRU, Richard Mendoza and the whole Arca Via Studios team. Brad Baldia and the team over at the Federation of Philippine American Chamber of Commerce. My faraway superhero Grant Cardone with his 10X philosophy. My family and especially my loving partner who supports me in all of my ventures.
