We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Friday and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Queens, New York raised in Brooklyn then I moved to Richmond, VA.. Youngest of 2. Both my parents and sister are from the Country of Trinidad and Tobago. I was raised in the Christian faith. Seventh-Day Adventist to be exact. I would say growing up with that background really impacted the way I handle certain situations…good and bad…just like you, I’ve been through a whole lot And also it really just made me enjoy life and creativity. My father always tells me “Jojo, don’t ask God to order your steps if you’re not gonna move your feet.” He worked hard to provide and my mother did the same as well. My sister is a mother of 3 and she achieved her degree while her husband was on deployment. The way our parents worked through tough times in a country where they really didn’t know a soul is what really inspires me to keep pushing in anything I do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m currently a cook in the US Navy. I’ve been in for about 8 years. The job is what it is really. SUPER long hours but I just don’t let it get to me really. It’s actually a workout in a sense. You get up early, cook, pan it up, move around, lift boxes, etc. it’s more to it than what people think. Yet, I have had my downs. I recently lost two close friends I had and it messed me up. Even had “dark” thoughts at a point. Didn’t eat, didn’t sleep, and lost confidence in myself and in my wrestling ability. Yet, I just kept my faith and still pushed to be the best I can be. There was a time where on Friday’s I drove an hour to LA straight after working a 14 HOUR DAY to go and wrestle then drive back home late, slept for about 3-4 hours then up early in the morning to be back at work again the next day. It hurt but if you really want to make your dream a reality, you got to make sacrifices….even sleep. *Kanye Shrug* I’m even on YouTube with some friends reacting to K-pop music! The channel went from 0 to over 5k within almost a year. Oh and I also stream video games I also am planning to go back to school. I just want the world to know that it’s gonna hard in anything you decide to do. Entertainment, School, Social media, etc. but it will all work out in the end if you really put your mind to it but please make sure you MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF. You do that…you’ll win.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A lot of places in LA are unique in their own way but if you ask me, Player One in North Hollywood is my spot! I’ve been playing video games(and watching anime) since I could walk. The vibes are right, the drinks are delicious and it’s definitely a great place for a date. Also there’s a place called the Federal. It’s a two level building with a restaurant downstairs and a venue upstairs. I’ve met Sooooo many people there and RNS(Royal Nerd Society) we have an event there called “Sole Session” where we present talent to perform and we go around and get people to dance and feel the vibe! It’s been a success ever since and once Covid blows over…..stay tuned.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
S/O to my parents for showing me that no matter the situation…keeping your faith in God and family is all you need to be great in the world. My sister Jewelle We argued, we fought, but we always had each other’s back and will ALWAYS. Give my Nephews and niece a kiss for me please! To My brother Gvmby, We’ve been not best friends but brothers for a long period of time and he always kept it 100 with me whether I liked it or not. He’s family to me. Dxpe Show tings To RNS(Royal Nerd Society) I’m blessed to be part of the family. We want to bring creatives together out here in LA and we’ve been doing just that. We have more things we plan to do but you’re just gonna have to stay tuned for that. And to you reading this!(yes you.) You’ve taken time out of your schedule to read this and that’s support to me. Thank you It’s sooooo many more but I can’t get everyone. Just know that whether we talk on the regular or not. Just know that God loves you and so do I.
