We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate “The Natron” Harrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nate “The Natron”, how do you think about risk?
Everything is risky. Jim Rohn said it best “I’ll tell you how risky life is. You’re not going to get out alive”.

At some point when I was a young kid, I realized how full of shit adults were. Teachers, political and religious leaders, my parents. All of them.

They all seemed to have agendas and no idea what they were doing. Like large children with more money and more responsibilities.

Once that understanding solidified, I became extremely rebellious and took unnecessary risks in just about everything I got involved in. From extracurricular activities like skateboarding and motorcycles, to relationships, and even career paths as I got older.

Some failed and left me broke and/or broken hearted, and some succeeded. But I learned from those experiences. I learned to be courageous and see past the fear of failure. I learned no matter how deep you dig a hole, you can climb out of it. Most importantly, as cliché as it is, I learned no risk no reward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There is so much hypocrisy all around us, and as long as I can remember, I have been pretty defiant and rebellious, if not hostile at times, towards it.

I believe for the critical thinker, not much is easy. You risk being ostracized by those around you for questioning things or having a different perception and perspective. People you love and respect can and will push you way.

My art, if that’s what you want to call it, is the personification of that. Calling out and mocking the bullshit and hypocrisy. Plus a little fun and amusement I hope.

The hardest part and biggest challenge for me has been not over thinking things. I started Menace Clothing Company because I want to share what I like, what I want to wear, and what I think is fun. Staying true and within that space can be difficult. There is always doubt if a design is good or not, if others will enjoy it too. So remembering the production of this adventure isn’t for everyone and is an extension of myself and what I like can be difficult at times.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great question, and now I feel old af haha!

For food we are definitely eating a lot of Mexican. Nothing beats So Cal Mexican food! From Las Quatro Milpas to Tacos El Gordo, we will be eating some type of delicious Mexican daily.

When it comes to drinking, I am sober now, but I love myself a good dive. Cherrybomb, Live Wire, and The Landing in East County are a few good ones. So we’d make some pit stops and see what trouble we can find before heading to Excalibur cigar lounge. If you like cigars and whiskey, that is the best spot to end the night.

And of course the beach. It’s the ocean. You can’t go wrong with that and everyone from out of town wants to take a dip.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is one amazing person who made me who I am, and one experience that helped lead me down my path.

First my wife Julia. She saved me in countless ways. I never thought I’d have a family. Her genuine love, dedication, and responsiveness pulled me out of a dark reckless life filled with booze and debauchery.

We now have two rad little boys. All three of them are my life. I am the luckiest man to have ever lived.

The experience manifested in high school by a teacher who pushed me to confront my thoughts by applying action to them. Mr.Kruzwick or some shit, I don’t recall how to spell his name. Being the little menace I was in high school, I questioned everything. Especially our government and political leaders.

Senior year we had a congress woman come speak to our Political Science class. Right before she took to speaking, Mr.Kruzwick whispered to me “Now is your chance!” giving me the opportunity to ask all the questions my defiant little brain could think of.

By him allowing and encouraging me to explore how felt about what was happening in our world and express it to someone who was in direct influence of it really changed me.

Once she stopped calling on me and ignored my questions, I knew I was on the right path.
