We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was definitely inspired by entrepreneurs like Robert Kiyosaki and Tony Robbins. I like the freedom of running my own business and being my own boss. It can certainly be very challenging at times, since your level of success is directly related to your effort, but it is also very rewarding. I know that not everyone is built for running their own business, but I think the life skills that you develop as business owner, like responsibility, vision, and perseverance can be applied to any other job. But most importantly, I believe you need to train your mind to think like an owner, rather than just a cog in the machine. The most successful people that I know are owners. They purchase or create their own businesses. They own property instead of renting. They are creators rather than just consumers. So the sooner you can move into the owner category, the better.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Telling stories is a huge passion mine. My favorite stories, are those that exam the human condition, through drama, comedy or adventure. I love developing new stories and talking with other storytellers. I was inspired to get into filmmaking after seeing Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. Watching those films, and behind the scenes documentaries, changed my life. I went to Biola University and studied film production. It’s definitely not an easy career, but it’s very rewarding. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of documentaries, features and short films. Last year, I started The About Story Podcast, where I interview writers, directors and producers. This has been an incredible experience and something that I had wanted to do for a long time, but I had always made excuses, like I was too busy, but in reality, I was just nervous to host a show and scared of failing. But I finally just did, and it was one of the best decisions I made. Now, I get to take my stories to the next level. The best advice I can give people, is to just do the things that you feel called to do, and figure it out as you go. Success is built on failure.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in LA, so there’s always a lot to do. I like going to comedy shows. I love seeing plays at the Pantages Theater, like the Lion King or Hamilton. I enjoy going to museums, like the Getty. The Disney Concert Hall is amazing too. One of my favorite restaurants is Fogo de Chao. My favorite fast food is Chick-fil-a and Ono Hawaiian BQQ.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to my parents who always encouraged me to work and follow my dreams.
