We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Ricks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The reason why I choose to pursue a creative career was that it was in my spirit to do so. I’ve had a creative spirit since I was born. All my life I’ve done music. I love making myself and other people happy and make them smile with the God-given gift that I have of being a creative being.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the Founder and Owner of Natrix Entertainment LLC. I am a Drummer/ Music Director/ Arranger/ and Programmer. I am a recent Berklee College of Music Graduate (2017), my major concentration in Music Performance with a Minor in Music Production. Born & raised in Motown (Detroit, Michigan) my principal instrument is the drum kit. I’ve worked with several distinguished artists: Lionel Richie, BooBoo Stewart, Justine Skye, Arin Ray, Disney Channel, and many many more. I’m a seasoned Gospel musician who plays a diversity of musical genres and winner of multiple drum competitions, band awards and during my tenure at Berklee – I’ve also supported new artists in a Music Director role. Getting to this road was far from easy. being a musician in this industry will never be easy. You never have a secure job, constantly getting rejected, constantly getting lowballed, dealing with many crooks in this industry, not having a stable income, etc. I overcome them by reminding myself every day why I started. I love doing what I do. I love making myself and others around me happy with my God-given talent. I’m pretty sure a lot of musicians will agree with me when I say that we love the music but we hate the music industry. What I want people to know about me and about my story is that we can do it. You can follow your dreams, you can prove the doubters wrong, you can dream again, you can take your dreams and goals off the shelf and do what you love to do. You don’t have to be labeled as one thing. People don’t know me as just a musician, but I’m also a Youtuber, I’m a businessman, I’m an investor, I teach musicians about financial literacy. You don’t have to be boxed in as one thing. The more that you are the more value you hold. And dreams do come true and always keep God first.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorite spots in the city hmmm………. My favorite spot to eat at is Cane’s Chicken Fingers. Ordering anything off the menu can last me the entire day. As far as a place to visit here in LA, I enjoy going to Glendale, Pasadena, Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Woodland Hills, Anaheim, Studio City, and Universal City. If I go out I like going to the Grove, the Americana, Marina Del Ray, Venice Beach, and Santa Monica. These are all the places and locations that I personally would recommend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to shoutout to God. #ShoutouttoGod. Without the person He created me to be I wouldn’t have made it this far in my career, I wouldn’t have known my passion is, if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t even be doing this interview. Whenever I do interviews, I always push God because he always pushes me. I would also like to shoutout to my mother Sheila Ricks and my father Aaron Williams for believing in my creative spirit and investing in me at a young age. I would like to shoutout to my family who has supported me on my journey all these years. I would also like to shoutout all my friends new and old who’ve stood by me and have always pushed me to be my best in every area of life. I would also like to shoutout my haters as well because it’s them that lights a fire in me and that makes me go even harder.
