We had the good fortune of connecting with Negar Mohammadi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Negar, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
14th Night is a clean haircare brand launched from an authentic desire for clean, haircare products that make hair look its absolute best, naturally; As in without reliance on salon treatments. I wanted haircare products that did more than temporary improve the appearance of hair with enhanced shine or texture, but actually made hair stronger and radiant from good health.  This authentic desire is woven throughout every aspect of the brand – from the ingredient profiles to the mindful formulation which make it the perfect haircare brand I myself was seeking. As the founder, I’m proud to share that 14th Night is the only haircare brand I personally use and believe this authentic loyalty and commitment to my own products has been a factor behind its success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I launched 14th Night after nearly a decade at Vogue, where I felt I had been exposed to every haircare product on the market. Prior to Vogue, I worked in fashion at Theory, Helmut Lang, and Ralph Lauren and am so grateful for the experiences I gained by working for big brands.  I never imagined myself to be a clean beauty entrepreneur, but after seeing that what I was desiring in haircare did not exist, I played around with the formulas that were passed down to me through my family and 14th Night’s first product, The Hair Elixir was born.

It was not easy to make the change from a well-known brand such as Vogue, and the security that comes along with it, to create something completely new. However, my career experiences taught me about the importance of integrity, and I knew that as long as I was passionate about my brand and truly believed in it, others would want to engage with it as well. Being an entrepreneur comes with a lot of unknowns and no days are ever the same. However, staying rooted with integrity makes each next step easier to see and achieve.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in New York City, in Greenwich Village, which is my favorite neighborhood in the city. I would make sure to take them to my favorite coffee shop, The Elk,for one of their amazing cappuccinos and tahini cookies. We’d then go to the Whitney, which I love for its ever-changing exhibitions as well as their permanent contemporary exhibit.  The Whitney sits below, The Highland, which is one of my favorite things to show tourists for its unique view of the city, architectural structure, and evolving garden. Via Carota is one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, and while there’s often a wait for a table, Bar Pisellino across the street is a perfect place to settle for a drink while you wait for your table. I love their white spagliato but maybe love the people watching even more.  And if the night is going beyond dinner. I favor The Mulberry and love ending the night there with a disco ball and a nightcap. If weather and time permits, I’d love to take a drive to Montauk where I spend my summer near Ditch Plains Beach. It always amazes me that I have proximity to surf while living in the city and it’s worth going to even during the off season to enjoy the beach, some waves, and catch local seafood from Inlet or the Dock before heading back to the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to the amazing women in my family. 14th Night is a manifestation of the Persian beauty secrets I grew up with. I learned about the importance of clean beauty early on, before it was a term, and when it simply meant using the most natural of products on your hair and skin. I also learned about the magic of certain, prized botanicals abundant in my Persian culture including pomegranate, argan, and almond oils.  These botanicals are full of antioxidants and vitamins that have the ability to transform hair from the inside out when they are formulated mindfully without harmful chemicals (clean). This knowledge transfer from my ancestors, to me, and now through my brand is what I’m most grateful for and credit to 14th Night’s creation.
