We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nia, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
One of the most important decisions I made for my business was deciding to only create things that I personally loved, felt passionate about and would purchase myself. It is really difficult to be a maker for a living and sometimes, there is a push to feel like I have to do everything everyone likes but the reality is that I cannot execute a design properly if I do not have a real interest and knowledge in the background material I am using. There are two reasons why this decision was so important: other people will love something you love no matter what, you just have to find them and while it’s hard to make things for a living, making things I actually enjoy keeps me grounded in why I began making to begin with.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a long history with creating and making and am very fortunate to have had parents and teachers who encouraged me to make the things I wished to make. I never knew my kind of art was an actual profession that a person could go into; I always thought of artists as the incredible people who paint on canvases, sculpt clay, compose music and more. My personal style is quirky and fun; I don’t like for things to feel too serious in my own work and that always made me feel like it could only ever be a hobby.
Making art was and continues to be one of the hardest things I have ever done but it also has been incredibly rewarding. I am able to continue because of the support of the people I love and also my incredible buyers and collectors; I could absolutely not create as much as I am able to without them purchasing the pieces I make.
I’ve learned that every single thing you make will not be successful and you have to be okay with that and not take it personally. This lesson definitely reaffirmed my belief in making things I love because at least I can have happiness in creating even if something is unsuccessful.
My goal is to bring joy and happiness to people through wearable works of art. Everyone feels good when they get a compliment; nothing honors me more than hearing that someone received a compliment while wearing my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have yet to visit LA but would love to hear what is great there myself!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My significant other, Mitchell, has been so supportive of me always. He actually was the reason I even started an Instagram page and even felt like I could not only sell my art but grow it into something bigger. He continues to be my shoulder to lean on and is always there, whether things are going smoothly or if I’ve hit a rough patch.
