We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Cavalier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think it’s really important to recharge and disconnect. These days your phone is beeping with a notification or text message every minute. I think it’s important to make time to be in your own thoughts, experience life as it’s happening. One hand washes the other. If I get off a long production, I need some time to recharge and reset before I dive back in. That balance is everything to being able to keep this up at a high level without burnout or mental exhaustion.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am proud to have tried my best to make the things I want to watch and feel are missing in the world. I believe a three piece suit is still in style for a reason. The best things in the world that connect deeply to our psyche and are objectively good don’t go away. I want to create timeless art, not to be swayed by the popular trends and flavor of the week. I believe when you are hiring a director, you are hiring a perspective and a process of working. That perspective is a reflection of you and your life. There is only one you. I guess that’s been my biggest takeaway over the years, Lean into what is uniquely you. In that confidence and fearlessness lies a some spark of imagination and chances are that will translate into something powerful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Not one group or person in particular, but lots of folks believing in me, especially on the crew side. I’ve been lucky enough to work with all sorts of people from the finance side of production, to the music and mix and master who are as passionate and excited to make powerful work as I am. To me thats invaluable, and has made me the creative mind I am today.
