We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Lamar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
One of my favorite quotes is “F the majority”

I started using that in college at a time when I felt like I needed to let everyone know I was my own person with my own mind. Even in music sometimes I have to shut-out the noise and opinions and get back to the dreams and visions I set for myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer/songwriter, Producer based in Los Angeles. If I had to use one word to describe my music it would be, UNEXPECTED. I think the way I interpret my music sets me a part. Thats really what sets anyone a part to be honest. We all have such unique perspectives and I think it’s beautiful when artist capture those pure, honest moments in their music.

One of the hardest things at the start of my journey was learning how to produce. I remember when I was working on my first EP, BEL-AIR, frustrated that I couldn’t translate my ideas as fast as seasoned producers. I said to myself “producing music is so hard. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get it. But it can’t be as hard I think. Can it?” I was so determined to figure it out so I got on Youtube (Youtube University as I like to call it) and just started consuming as much knowledge as I could. It took tons of trial, error and failures but all the hard work has really payed off in ways I couldn’t have imagined. One lessoned I learned for sure is that no one is going to hold your hand throughout this journey. If you want it, you truly have to go get it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anytime I have some family in town, I always take them to some of the best hidden gems in LA. Here’s a few spots that you have to check out.

Anejo Cantina & Grill – Sherman Oaks,CA (Literally has the BEST happy hour fish tacos in town!)
Blaqhaus NoHo – They have the best Carolina Gold wings in the valley and its Black OWNED so its a must.
Kanan Road Overlook – There’s this hidden overlook look driving down Kanan road has some pretty amazing views.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my incredible team and company, House of M.I wouldn’t be here without the help of my business and music partners Taj Wilkes and Ryan Mack, Over the past 9 years, these guys really worked with me day in and day out to develop the sound you hear today. I’m so grateful to have people in my corner who not only support me but that understand me. I would also like to dedicate this shoutout to my FOLK! family.
