Meet Nicolas Ambrosio | Jewelry Designer. Entrepreneur. Creative director.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicolas Ambrosio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicolas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I finish my career, economic science, I knew clearly that I was not built to follow orders. Since then I decided I was going to build my own business and decided to live life according to those rules of self sufficiency. 9 to 5 wasn’t inspire me so I decided to travel the world. Didn’t know at all what was going to be my business but the feeling of being free of the classic working force was very strong one me.
After many years of traveling and exploring the world, having numerous different jobs, I understood that the way to keep traveling and creating money wasn’t that easy and trough making jewelry and selling it on the road was the best way to continue this life style.
Then I arrived to NYC which fascinated me and allowed me to create my business and the base for the next years to come.

What should our readers know about your business?
In a word, unique. My business is an evolution of myself, each piece I create holds its own story and is a reflection of my own experiences. Each design is carefully crafted by hand from initial concept to final product using precious metals and rare gems.
Products and services include:
Heirloom Signets
Mixed mediums featuring pearls and chains
Fingerprint impression made in wax and cast in metal
Wedding and engagement custom rings
Custom work: Exclusive to every client where I thrive in showcasing my techniques such as wax molding, carving 3D printed prototypes, casting, engraving, and hand finishing.
The creative process (my art) is never easy, somehow challenging even on the simplest details. But that’s the fun part.
I believe that my challenge is what is all about. Go trough it enjoy the process and sort difficulties in a creative way. Is the beautiful parallel of the life I decide to live.
The story of my brand begins over 20 years ago after graduating university in Argentina. Having been entranced by different cultures around the world, I decided to begin traveling. Starting in Panama my journey took me throughout Central America until an unfortunate encounter where all my belongings including my passport were stolen.
Unsure of what to do next I managed to catch a ride to Guatemala where a dear friend was waiting for me with an opportunity. I can still remember him saying “Nico I can give you a roof but can not maintain you”. He was an import/export merchant, he handed me a box filled with rings and earrings and sent me off to sell to retail shops around the center. In a few days, I was sold out and going back for a new box.
There was no stopping after that, I fell in love with the craft, with the process of connecting and selling. So I decided to go to Mexico to produce a line of my own, NIKUS, which I then launched in NYC. After years of success, the 2009 crash hit and I was forced to sell the brand. Determined to rebuild I moved to Milan to develop my craft and studied to specialize in design and gemology. From there I started new, all over again. My namesake Nicolas Ambrosio Jewelry.
NYC had become home so I returned to expand, bringing along a new set of skills and intention for the brand I wanted to create. It’s been an adventure one faced with new challenges at every turn but each one creates a new definition of the work I set out to create. Now each collection is made by hand in Brooklyn, NY but extends to major cities like Milan, and vacation places like Tulum, Costa Rica.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well NYC is full of exciting places and host a vast, international and magnificent cuisine. I would take them to the Museums; Met, Guggenheim, and a few more inside the gigantic list.
Walk around the iconic neighborhoods, and taste out some of my fav restaurants, the list is quiet long so I would leave the advertising behind. Then of course NYC Nightlife in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with its iconic clubs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
During my trips I met very fascinating characters that I perceive them as mentors and life business shamans. I realized long time ago that business has to be combine with a spiritual and a holistic approach of life.
Books that marked my path.
The Alchemist and the Power of Now.
