We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Margulis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
There is a marvelous quote by Bette Davis: “Without wonder and insight, acting is just a trade. With it, it becomes creation.” Personally, this thought magnifies what it is that pulls me towards acting and character building. It’s all about creation. Building a character from scratch is exhilarating because you get to explore new perspectives and channel things within yourself that you may not otherwise get to explore. Voice acting is even more freeing because you truly can be anything, from a six-eyed alien to a bullfrog, and everything in between, it’s
pure play.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always felt compelled to create. It wasn’t until later in life that I understood that I could channel this drive into a career. My first challenge was trying to narrow my focus. I love to paint and draw, as well as act and tell stories. When it comes to the arts, focusing in can really be beneficial when trying to grow a business. About ten years ago, I decide to take the leap and jump into acting full time. I learned what set me apart. What skills I could bring to the table that others, perhaps, could not. My military background opened doors in the stunt world, and helped me fashion a brand built on strong, independently minded female characters. There, were, and are hurdles at every turn in the entertainment industry, but I found creating my own opportunities and surrounding myself with like-minded story tellers of varying perspectives made all the difference.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Southern California has so many gems. It’s really no wonder why so many people visit here or choose to live here. I love showing friends places that seems like they couldn’t possibly be in L.A. Our first stop would probably the Descanso Gardens, which is one of the most beautiful spots here in town. It’s like it’s own little lush wonderland. The Gardens are a great place to go for some meditative reflection, and deep mental and emotional relaxation. The Huntington Museum is another great spot with amazing gardens and beautiful architecture. As a volunteer for Kitten Rescue Los Angeles, I would also encourage friends and visitors alike to visit our nursery and adoption center in Atwater Village. You can see for yourselves how the community has come together to help animals in Los Angeles, and maybe even adopt a life long friend while you are there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I absolutely would not be where I am in my voice over career without the teachings and guidance of Tish Hicks and the VO Dojo. This vibrant community of voice over artists train and grow together in a harmony that I have yet to find in other aspects of the entertainment industry. Tish is all about encouraging artists to tap into the power of our voice. After I served in the military, I very much felt like I had lost my voice. Tish helped me to reconnect, refocus, and channel that which makes me unique into my reads. She really helped me regain a sense of self, while also helping me create characters and play in the field of voice over. The connections she and her team helped me to forge have been lasting and very impactful on my career.
