We had the good fortune of connecting with Nik Jermaine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nik, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

Unfortunately, my Spanish (and my memory) isn’t too great, but I was friends with someone whose dad would tell them a phrase that translated to something along the lines of, “without fear, you wouldn’t know that something is worth it.” They would often repeat that first part: “sin miedo,” when doing something or considering a situation they were nervous about. It stuck with me. We both have anxiety and they explained the phrase to me. It basically meant that the anxiety or the nerves you feel is an indicator of a potentially great outcome. It helps redirect my nervous energy into focusing on good thoughts.

Another great way to phrase that idea, and another quote I love is from the late great Carrie Fisher: “Stay afraid, but do it anyway.”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I started out as an actor and occasional model, then I got into writing and directing. Story-telling, particularly theatre, was my first love. It was in a theatre class that I met my friends with whom I co-founded Crazy10 Entertainment with in 2017. It’s been a ride.

I had to learn to stop questioning myself or listening to people who aren’t supportive of my creative ambitions, and just go for it. You might think that you don’t have what you need to make your project or achieve a goal. There’s also the issue of balancing all the aspects and responsibilities in life. It can be challenging, but if it’s for you, you’ll find a way to make it happen even if it takes time. You’re working on your own timeline and that’s okay.

Crazy10 has been growing since we started in 2017. We’ve been lucky enough to attend comic cons as press and write articles for other events, like concerts and gaming events. We’re currently working on growing the blog and writing more fun posts. We’re still working on original projects, including the Mortuus Est podcast series. The first part of the series, Mortuus Est: Legacy, came out last spring. Since then, we’ve made the rounds at a few film festivals and won awards at two.

We’re currently in pre-production on a prequel called Mortuus Est: Origins. We’re also doing some planning to expand our production roster with short films and possibly, some stage productions. I’m really excited about what the future holds for Crazy10 and for myself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When people come to town, we usually end up trying new places. Some places I would like to check out are Pasta Sisters in Culver City, Yung Ho Dou Jiang Restaurant in Alhambra, and the food court at the Wat Thai Temple in Panorama City. I would also suggest some of my favorite places like Dr. Hogly Wogly’s Tyler Texas BBQ, Sam Woo BBQ (both in Van Nuys), Ring Baked Tofu Donuts in Canoga Park, Aki Shabu in North Hollywood, and Junbi in Westwood.

Other fun activities I’d suggest are:
– going to a karaoke bar (Karaoke Bleu in Sawtelle, Backstage Bar in Culver City, and Carnival Karaoke in Van Nuys are spots that I usually hit up)
– making a custom Funko Pop at the Funko Store in Hollywood
– vintage shopping (I love Hidden Treasures in Topanga or the Magnolia Park area of Burbank)
– doing a photo shoot. There are a bunch of cool places around LA to take photos with friends (I’d suggest a hiking trail!)

There’s always new things popping up. I’ve lived in LA my whole life and I’m still finding spots I’ve never heard of before. Wherever you go, if you end up walking or driving around you’ll probably find something you haven’t done/seen.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my sister and my best friend, Andy. They are pretty much my backbone and I don’t think I’d be able to get through life without them. Also my my other best friend Amy; she’s a wonderful person, support, and collaborator. I don’t think I could say thank you enough to any of them to show my gratitude for putting up with me.
