We had the good fortune of connecting with Nina Muccia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nina, what was your thought process behind starting your own gallery?
Many of the best experiences I’ve had showing and receiving art have been at alternative spaces, and I always wanted to facilitate one myself. We are made to feel that we can’t operate things without a certain amount of capital – be that money, real estate, status, etc. – but if you’re willing to exist outside of formal institutions there is always a way. I’ve seen people host shows in u-hauls and dog parks! Plus it can be fun and generative to have built in themes and parameters for the work.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since starting this project a lot of people have assumed I’m interested in becoming a curator. It somehow didn’t occur to me that this would be the primary assumption, and a large function of running Quarters, but it’s not an aspiration of mine – I hate saying no to people, and always want to include everyone in everything! I’m more interested in seeing ways in which you can foster community, and bring people together over a common idea or theme. I’m excited that it feels like this community aspect is coming to fruition in such a short time, and will continue to expand!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a historically east coast person I’m constantly in awe of the beautiful landscape of LA and the novelty associations of Hollywood and the way these intermingle. I think anyone not familiar with LA needs to experience that!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, who taught art classes to neighborhood children and adults out of our attic for my entire childhood.
