We had the good fortune of connecting with Nindya Bucktowar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nindya, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I am a multidisciplinary designer, artist and entrepreneur. My work takes a big space in my daily life, mind space and identity. I found throughout the years, that the stress levels and responsibility did not get easier as my business grew.

When I started my business, I adopted an unhealthy culture of 24/7 relentless work pattern, because there was so much to do and so little that I knew. I quickly realized, it was not sustainable for my mental and physical health, family life and productivity. This is where balance was necessary.

I recently found an effective way to maintain balance by prioritizing my health and family life. This doesn’t mean that I spend less time on my business. What it means is that exercise, eating healthy, quality family time and personal time in a non negotiable daily commitment. Everything else revolves around the fact that I need to have a healthy mind and body, before I can be optimal at running my business. This has been one of the most rewarding approach to my busy life so far.

Balance is crucial in all aspect of life, even if not always maintained due to the nature of life. Defining what balance means in the different aspect of one’s life, offers a goal to work towards and an intention for optimization.

Making beautiful things for a world in need of more kindness, beauty and love, is definitely one of my vocation in life. I do it fiercely, relentless and free of limitations. I approach every task with authenticity and honesty. In my world, nothing is impossible, and this is a very empowering quality I possess.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would open my home studio to them. I have created a world of magic and beauty rich with creativity at home. My home studio consists of a leather workshop, art studio and ceramic studio. The building is a historical piece built in 1901 in the heart of Durban, South Africa. Being born in Mauritius, now living in South Africa, I have a unique cooking style. One of my love languages is cooking for the people in my life, so I would most probably make a delicious creole dish for my visitors.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Behind my success there is my partner Nikhil Tricam and my team. Having a team that supports you is crucial to success.
